Rear Wiper Blades

I just picked up an '04 and when I went to replace the rear wiper blade I noticed it had an arm built in for it to work with the 'receiver' on the gate. The one I got at the parts shop doesn't have this. Does anyone know if I need to buy something special or how this works?

I also find it does a pretty poor job of cleaning the back window - is this typical?

Sorry for the lack of tech terms - not too knowledgeable about this stuff.

I have an '08 and just replaced the blade itself. I had to buy a 14" blade (only), then cut 2" off. Works just fine.

I was told the 2005 was one assembly and available only at the dealer? Maybe I missunderstood but pretty sure that is what AutoZone told me, is the same true for the 04?

I have had to replace mine on my 04 SR5. I simply bought the blade from the dealer for about $2.00

I went to two dealers and they both didn't have a replacement blade.

The rear wiper blade takes a rubber insert of between 12-14 inches. So I buy a 26" blade from Target, cut it in half, then replace the rubber in the arm.

I then have a replacement blade that I use 6 months later. It works like a charm, it's cheap, and it provides a backup blade.

What they are saying is - keep the existing rear wiper arm - it is OEM and you can only find at the dealer for $$$.

Instead just buy a cheapo micro edge or some brand wiper or even the insert by itself at your local autoparts store. Slide the old rubber part out and slide the new one in and you are good to go.

Aftermarket Rear Wiper FINALLY Available for Gen4 4Runner

Trico literally just introduced this new part number in September 2010...finally a snap-on rear wiper blade assembly for the 2003-2009 (Gen 4) Toyota 4 Runner that looks just like the factory original and snaps right on. Trico Exact Fit Rear 14-F I've been using this brand/model (different part number though) on my Jeep and they're pretty much exactly like the original blade. The NeoForms also work great on the front - fyi. Hope this helps others.

I still have my original rear assembly and was told the same from AUTOZONE. I like the idea about getting a larger blade, trimming it down and installing it.

All I have ever used in 8 years is the $2 oem replacement blades. My original rear lasted until this summer even in the Arizona heat. I just replaced it because it was 8 years old even though it worked fine.

Where do you find refills now-a-days? And isn't $2 an exaggeration on price? They seem to be impossible to find in Wisconsin and when you can there's all different variations of them, plus the price is only a few dollars less than replacing the whole shootin' match.

This all said, the winter ice and snow really puts the rear blade and arm through its paces, so I prefer to replace the blade and frame since they receive so much abuse each season. I also don't have the patience to mess around with bending tabs and cutting rubber etc. So, call me lazy!! LOL Replacing the whole wiper blade took me less than 1 minute. (see the Roc Lock 2 Video) I hear ya on the refills, but that's just not for me.

The dealer ones are cheap, watch out though, some will try to pull the "you have to replace the entire thing", which happened to me. I only got taken for about $12 though and mine was looking ratty.

The "Insert" which is the actuall rubber blade is $2.00 from the dealer, and the "wiper blade" which is the arm and the rubber "insert" is $13... I just had to buy it because my blade broke a clip... I don't think $13 is bad for a specialty part like that.

The dealer can order them for you if they do not have it in stock. And no $2 is not a exageration. Ok maybe $3 with tax. No cutting or bending tabs are needed if you get the correct replacement. Takes less than 5 minutes to put in. If you want I can probably find the part number for a 2003.

I do not want to replace just the rubber insert . I also want to replace the blade with the Winter ANCO full rubber boot 30-13. I use the winter blades for the windshield year round like you.

How did you remove the old blade assembly? I cant figure it out and neither can the people at a local auto parts store.
