Rear wiper motor stud broken

So;
I was changing my rear wiper arm and the main stud (which connects directly to the motor) sheared at the nut as I was taking it off.
The wiper arm is still on the splined shaft nice and tight, so I still have a rear wiper.

Wondering if I need to replace the whole motor or if there's a way to replace the shaft or if anyone else has had this problem.

I would think you could drill it and tap threads to use a bolt instead of the nut.

Otherwise I think you will have to replace the entire motor, but I'm not sure if that's the case.

We just bought an 07 4runner and the threads were broken off also, went local wreckers and bought a replacement motor. It was easy to install. They charged me an arm and a leg, but it is working now. The copies on eba? were cheaper but I didn't want to take the chance because the window just clears motor by a few millimeters.

Had the same problem on my 04 Limited. I tried to tap out what was left of the stud but it just doesn't have a large enough diameter to make it work.

Ended up ordering OEM motor from Amazon:

Installation was pretty easy.

I may try a last ditch effort of tapering it and tig welding it on.

Mine was purchased without an actual arm/blade--just the nub of the motor sticking out where the arm is supposed to mate to.

Instead of TIG'ing it on, I was going to epoxy the two together.
Worst case, it doesn't work, and I have to buy a $200 motor to fix it. Best case it works?

Anyone want to pursuade me to NOT epoxy the arm ($30 part IIRC) to the nub from the rear wiper motor?

I should think it'd work. That arm can be finicky though. I broke mine when improperly trying to change the wiper blade. It does stay on there pretty well though.

Let us know how it goes, and I'll keep you posted if I do end up welding mine

I swapped out the rear wiper motor with a part-out. It’s pretty easy to access and take out through an access panel in the hatch door.

I did it with a friend and it took about 2 hours, it was really really easy. You just take the rear panel off the hatch, rip a hole in the plastic sheet and remove (3?) bolts IIRC.

When installing the new one, make sure to add some antiseize on the thread and install the arm so you wont have this trouble. Also, you may need to get the rubber grommet replaced as well as the old one may rip due to age.

My stud broke as well due to rust. Out of curiosity, I took off the grommet and would you know that it is completely rust free. However, there is a massive amount of salt build up.

Any idea how salt would be getting in there? Was there ever a recall on this piece?

New to the 4runner world so questions may be pointless.

Theres no recall on it. I know my window actuator and other things inside the doors get corroded. I assume just with moisture seeping in with moving parts. The rubber guard around the windows provides protection, but wont be perfect. Certainly salt may get dissolved in water, snow rain and seep in as well
