Rebuild used 231mm or loaded NAPA Caliper for TBU?

probably because of all the sad things i've heard over the years….


QUESTION:

REBUILD USED CALIPERS I FIND AT JUNK YARD

OR…

JUST BUY LOADED 231MM TUNDRA CALIPERS FROM NAPA AND CALL IT A DAY



… what would YOU do? and why!!!!

You save time and get a warranty on the NAPA calipers if you go that route. If you rebuild the used calipers you have the piece of mind knowing that you used OEM rebuild parts. It's really up to you. I never hear bad things about NAPA brake parts.

can't say that i've heard anything negative about the brake calipers per say… maybe just their rotors….

with that said…. what does loaded mean and how am i going to load my used OEM calipers i potentially buy from a junkyard?

Do you have an Advance Auto in your area? They always have discounts and I haven't heard bad things about their brake parts. I got Wagner discs from them which have a lifetime warranty. If they warp, I bring them in and get new ones.

I'm looking at this right now. From what I've read loaded means the pads and such are already set in the calipers which makes for an easier installation. I'm contemplating spending about $400 for loaded napa calipers and brembo rotors and then will have only spent about $280 after core charges are refunded.

Pretty sure 'loaded' means it comes with pads.

what brembo rotors? slotted? drilled?

They are just the regular ones for like $60. I'll post the link when I get home if you still want to see them.

I'd go junkyard, for that is the route I took, bought a rebuild kit for $35, and all has been well for close to five years. I did have to buy new hardware kits because the pins were rusted to the calipers.

Pads: OEM, Wagner, Hawk, Akebono are good choices.

Brembo model #25534. The hats are rusty but that is to be expected living on salt water. Come on Arthur, I am ready!

This may be a big help it's the thread I fallowed when I upgraded mine to 199mm. I chose 199mm (WL) as I wanted to be able to use my factory spare tire and split 3 spoke rims without grinding or trimming issues and was a little concerned about either bending my existing hardline to work with the WG's or adding a banjo fitting. I couldn't be happier with the 199mm's.

I used NAPA calipers listed below with OEM pads and rotors. Calipers were "semi-built" meaning no pads but all springs hardware etc...
