Rebuilt engine... except for gaskets?

Hey all! Newbie here, and relatively new to working on cars altogether, so bear with me..

Now, I purchased a "rebuilt" 3.0 V6 3VZ-E engine for $1150 and had a family friend drop it in. He is a self-employed mechanic.

This engine was supposedly rebuilt by someone else 20,000 miles ago, and then that somebody else went out for a day of hardcore wheeling and rolled his truck, and left it sitting in a ditch, upside down, until he decided to part out his rig. From what I hear, the rig was left upside down for so long that the valve cover gaskets became so saturated with oil that they started to leak. The engine still runs good, however, and shows about 160 compression all around.

so me and a co-worker decided to replace the valve cover gaskets today, and then when I went home and went back out, I found there till to be oil spots on the ground. Any Ideas of where it would be leaking? The guy who dropped it in said the rear main seal is brand new.

well heres the thing about rebuilt engines they may have all new parts and gaskets but it doesnt mean they were installed correctly or that they were good qaulity.

my suggestion to you is to get dirty and dig around look for the leak could be a oil line a pressure sensor that isnt tight or sealed. many things can leak oil.

if you find the point were it leaks you can fix it the oil system is by far on of the easy things to seal up unless its the rear main seal then its a headache but fixable.

Give the motor a good wash with a degreaser. I did the VC gaskets on my kids runner and it still dripped. Turned out to be residual oil left in all the nooks and crannies. Hope it works out for you.

Clone: yeah that's What I was thinking it could be too. Just residual oil dripping off. It looked like a bigger drip than I thought. I have been checking tha puddles on the ground under the rig, and it looks like It's just weeping very slowly. Like dime (or smaller) sized puddles on the ground. Thanks for your input guys, I guess I'll just deal with it till it annoys the you-know-what outta me!
