Toyota Recalls 880,000 Vehicles....

TOYOTA, Japan (Reuters) -- Toyota Motor Corp. has said it will recall about 880,000 sport utility vehicles (SUVs) and pickups worldwide, mostly in the United States, to fix a defect in the front suspension that could hamper steering.

Covered in the recall, aimed at fixing front-suspension ball joints that could wear faster than they should, are the Tacoma and Tundra pickup trucks and Sequoia, Landcruiser Prado and 4Runner/Hilux Surf SUVs built between May 2001 and December 2003.

Of the total, 789,000 units are in North America.

Japan's top auto maker said it does not disclose estimated recall costs.

A spokesman said there was one report of an accident in Japan, where Toyota is recalling 23,800 Hilux Surf and Landcruiser Prado vehicles. Information on accidents elsewhere was not immediately available.

The recall also covers 19,000 vehicles in Europe and 12,000 in Australia.

Don't worry if you in the list, toyota will send you a notice.

Another way to find out if you are in the range is to check on the sticker which on driver's side door jamp.

I would think so.

Wow ! mine was built on Jannuary 2004 and bought it on March 2004. So I'm cool. Regardless of what time range that being affected by this recall, this will hurt the Toyota SUV sale a lot.

Looks like mine will be one of them. My manufactured date was 02/03. I am going to the dealer today to pick up a part.....I will ask them what they know.
I am sure we will have to wait on an "official" recall form???

This maybe a silly question, but i am going outside to look at the rig to see when it was built. Do i see that on the sticker inside the door?

According to one source the 4th gen doesn't appear to be included, but by the other one the 03's would be.

When I saw the news last night, I thoguht this recall only affected the 2001 and 2002 4Runner. The Tundra and Seqioua are the only ones with the 2003 and 2004 models affected.

Doubt it would hurt sales one bit. Toyota will take care of its customers and if anything it will improve sales.

This is probably gonna apply to most of us '03 owners...mine was built in Jan. '03....this sucks. Do I just go to the dealer and see what they say? Or will i get notification

I am seeing the inconsistency with manufacture dates also...one article says 2001 - 2003 for all and the other breaks it up and the only 2003 models are the Tacomas...i guess I will have to wait and see if I get a letter since mine is Jan. '03

Toyota recalling 774,856 trucks and SUVs in U.S.

Toyota Motor, in one of its largest safety recalls ever, said Tuesday that it is recalling more than 750,000 pickups and sport-utility vehicles because of problems with the front suspension that could hinder steering.

The company said the recall covers 774,856 vehicles in the United States, including the 2001-2004 model years of the Tacoma, the 2001-2002 versions of the 4Runner and the 2002-2004 model years of the Tundra and Sequoia.

Toyota said the surface of a ball joint, which connects to the front suspension, may have been scratched when it was manufactured, which could lead to wear and tear over time.

Any excessive wear or looseness in the joint could force drivers to exert more effort when steering, allow the vehicle to drift and increase the amount of noise from the suspension.

Ming-Jou Chen, a Toyota spokeswoman, said the company had confirmed six cases in which the condition existed in the suspension. There have been no injuries associated with the problems.

I talked to my stealer up here in NJ. They said that they have onlk gottan a bit of info. But, that there was a possibilty that some of the 4th gens may be included. Anyone else hear anything about this.
