Recommend a come-a-long (cable winch puller)

I need recommendations for a come-a-long (cable winch puller). I know of the Wyeth-Scott More Power Puller line but I'm trying to find something decent that is less expensive.

Also what capacity should I get, I drive a 5th gen. Think i need a 4 ton, 3 ton?

You can use a Hi-lift jack as a winch too, just something to think about. I've seen come alongs fail here for other members so I'm not sure I would trust them, but those also might have been cheap harbor freight ones.

Hi lift jacks are awful as winches, I've done it and have no interest in a hi lift

Coincidentally OutdoorX4 has an article on winching with a hi lift that shows a good size comparison. In addition to rigging being easier with a comealong, it's also smaller

American Power Pull

American Power Pull makes a come along that is identical to the Wyeth-Scott for about half the price. As far as I can tell there is no difference between the two. The rating depends on the safety factor and as far as I could tell they have the same capacity. Capacity on either brand is halved if you don't use the pulley hook. I bought the American Power Pull as a much less expensive alternate to a steel bumper and winch or hidden winch mount and because we rarely use it here in So Cal.

I have a MAASDAM POW'R-PULL Model 144SB-6 2 TON. I bought it in 2002 for not much money.
It works just fine for pulling a 4000 lb vehicle up a 3 foot rock waterfall. I haven't used it very many times over the last fifteen years but it works just fine.

i have used my More Power Puller for 25+ years, it has done more recoveries than I can count. Well worth the $$$

I've got some very nice 1/2 rope (previously used by cell tower/windmill maintenance folks - 8000 lbs test!) and a rope winch would thus provide for a much longer pull between re-rigging.

Here are examples for 4 and 6 ton dragging capacity, although these use synthetic rope:

One would need to match the strength and diameter of the rope to the strengtj and rope-handling capacity of the tackle block.

okay, yeah that's just a regular come-a-long with synthetic rope instead of wire rope, your pull length is still limited to what you can fit on the drum

i thought you were talking about tirfor/griphoist style winch where you are only limited by your rope/wire length, the problem with those though is that anything with a decent rating costs a fortune.
