Recommendation on oil changes.

Our maintenance light on the dash just came on and we have our first 5000 mile service scheduled for tomorrow. I will let you know how it goes and what they have to say about the interval. I have not received any notification in the mail about a change in interval for oil changes.

On the online scheduled maintenance guide at 5000 intervals it says:
Note: If 0W-20 oil WAS NOT used at the last oil change, replace engine oil and oil filter.
So if you use 0W-20 you can go 10000 between oil changes

I doubt you can find 0W-20 oil that's not full synthetic.

I got the same thing first time, and it was 20$ more than the second time..*scratches head* but the last one they said they were extending it out to 7,500 for the next one.

A side note of having the work done by the dealers. For the last vehicles, (a Ford, a Nissan, and a Mazda) I had all service and mechanical work performed by the dealers. I can honestly say I never felt taken advantage of, or decieved. The people that purchased my vehicles were always thankful to have the records of ALL the maintenance performed on the vehicles. I guess it's like everything else, sometimes you get a clunker, but I would not hesitate to let the manager know that I was not satified (which happened twice in one dealership, and once in the other) and I expect to be treated fairly, and not dismissed or lied to. All dealerships are not the same sadly, but the ones that rely on repeat busines...always know, and never forget, how to treat a customer. That satisfied customer is like money in the bank.

I paid for the two oil changes I had before my 10k service, the first @ ~1000 miles and the second @ ~5000 miles. The first was to put in fresh oil after the break-in period, the second was to get on a 5k schedule, and to get them to turn off the damn light. Unfortunately for me, I was traveling when the 5k service came up, so I had to have it done in another state.

What you do with your truck is your business, but I'm changing my oil @5000 miles regardless of what Toyota says, even if I have to pay for it myself. It's nice that I can go 10k miles, but only going 5k miles can't possibly hurt anything and can only extend the life of the engine. Am I wasting money of I get 25 years out of Shinju like I got out of my 1985 truck? I don't think so.

I've learned my lessons. I'm done with taking my car in for "service". When I take a car in I tell them what I want done. If they don't have the oil I want I'll bring in my own. I've got 1700 miles and I'll be doing my own O/C next weekend. Then I'll be using my free 2 year coupons every 5K for the next 25k. After that I'll make a decision on extending the OCI. Another thing, when I take in my car for service I'll be letting them know it better be the Toyota 0W-20 synthetic spec'd in my manual. I wanna see the bottles.

You set the volume, pulled the nozzle to the filler, and pulled the trigger. I guess what I'm saying is that there might not be any bottles. :thumb3:

On prior vehicles I used to mark the oil filter, air filter, and etc. with a colored paint pen. That way when I took it into a shop or dealer for an oil change I could verify that they did indeed change the oil or parts by looking at the new un-marked parts.

Although our new 5th gens seem to use an internal oil filter if I am not mistaken. I will have to look under there to see what I can mark to indicate to me they changed it out. And yes I know if I change the oil myself I would know it was done for sure, but right now I have 2years of free oil changes that I would like to use.

Good idea. I check fluid levels and look at the filter before I leave the dealer. I've found tools, missing caps and once had a filter with a screwdriver hole poked in it. I asked them if poking a hole in my old filter made it a new one. The guy said "no, why?". Then he told me the kid never came back from lunch. Sure, probably promoted him to sales. Also had a hole poked in my gas tank once. Love those dealers.

0W-20 is becoming the new standard for pretty much all new Toyotas. If it isn't bulk now, it will be soon.

I would tend to agree with SeattleMike, a more rigorous oil change schedule surely cannot hurt the motor. We had our first 5000 mile service and went with synthetic(not sure what they put in though). The service sticker now says next service 10,000 not 15,000 miles. I will try to do the next oil change at 10,000 miles.. I look at it as, oil's cheap, engines aren't. Sooner is better than later, cleaner is better than dirty. IMO

Went to the dealer this morning to pick up a case of 0W20 oil and a few filters and crush washers. They had a wrench for 12 bucks so I got that too. Didn't have TRD oil filters in stock but they quoted me a price about 3x the regular ones. I also talked to some service guys who told me they have 0w20 Toyota oil in bulk and use it if the car specs it. I didn't ask how much for an o/c, I didn't want to find out it was cheaper than what I had just paid for the parts.
I took off the oil drain plug cover, the front plastic cover, and the front skid plate. No need to jack up the car to remove it. I also took off the upper cover to have a look around. I love working on nice, clean cars. That aluminum bumper is pretty impressive.
My garage got a little too hot to work in so I'll probably finish the job in the morning. I'll try to take some pics.

I picked up my oil and filter today. It was $49 for a filter and 7 quarts of 0-W20 oil. I couldn't remember how many quarts it takes so I erred on the side of caution. I figure I'll look at the condition of the oil after the first 5000 miles and decide if I'll go to 5k or 10k on my changes.

Finished the oil change, only took 2 days.
Someone asked for pics so I took a few.

Start with a new crush washer (for the drain plug) and filter, (comes with the 2 o-rings and the drain tube).

- 6.6 quarts Toyota 0W-20 oil

- Toyota filter kit # 04152-YZZA5

- Toyota oil drain plug gasket (part # 90430-12031) get these on Amazon or the dealer

- Large drain pan

- Funnel

- 64mm filter wrench

- 3/8" drive ratchet, extension and 10mm, 12mm, & 14mm sockets

Torque specs
- Filter Drain Plug - 10 ft-lb
- Oil Filter Cap (plastic housing) - 18 ft-lb
-Skid plate bolts (x4) - 21 ft-lb
- Engine under Cover Seal (x2) - 21 ft-lb
- Oil Pan Drain Plug - 30 ft-lb

I took off 5 covers but the top 2 were just for looking around.
The "Upper radiator support seal" has 12 plactic clips. I used my fingernail and a small flat blade to get them out. Push down and they pop up.
