Recommended locking rear diff kit?

I recently shed the junk automatic hubs off the front end of my 89 4Runner, and am looking to install the last thing on my list, a lockable rear differential.

What are we going with here? I am in the market for something affordable, and realistic.

My 89 has a stock IFS setup, and will never run tires bigger than 31". The truck sees mild offroad conditions (trailing, moderate terrain), lots of snow, and is driven on the street often.

What should I go with?

Define "affordable". A Spartan automatic locker is $250 or so at Rockauto and can be installed in your driveway, and is plenty strong enough for mild wheeling. You won't sacrifice any driveability, but you will have to compensate for it's quirks. Or you can pick up an elocker with the right ring and pinion (expect to pay $400-$600), and install that yourself too, though a bit of fabrication and 12v wiring is required for that one. If you're not up for fabrication or the quirks of an automatic locker, then you'll have to have an elocker or ARB air locker professionally installed, and that can run you upwards of $1000, depending on stuff and things.
