Recommended Tires for a city slicker 4Runner

The 245/65/16 (I know, lame) Toyo Open Country A/Ts that came on my '01 are at about 5/32nd tread depth, so I'm now looking into swapping them out.

I plan to replace them with 265/70/16s, and I'd like to go with mild A/T tires, since I'm primarily on the highway, with the occasional trail expeditions.

Given the information above, what tires would you guys recommend?

I was looking into a set of Nitto Terra Grapplers (link is below). Do they produce road noise? That would be a deal breaker for me.

Love the Nittos I have the Terra Grapplers on my 4WD on my sons 2WD I have the Dura Grappler. Both are 65k miles rated.

Whatever you choose, don't forget to match the spare too. Last month I replaced all 5 of mine for a total of $600 with Ironman All Country AT 265/75/16's, rides pretty quiet on the highway and no rubbing. Pretty happy with them.

I'm happily on my second set of Yokohama Geolander AT/S tires. I got 60k out of the first set and the second set is wearing just as even after 20k miles. Yokohama frequently offers a rebate card also. I'll admit that my 4Runner sees almost all highway so I'm in the same boat.

Quietest on road mild AT tire is the Michelin LTX. It's worth the extra money.

Read the reviews at Tire Rack & go for the cheapest of the highest rated tires in their class. For your use I like the Bridgestone Dueler Revo2 A/T's.

If you haven't done it yet change your coils & shocks too. I drove for way too long on the originals. Stay stock & get the 99 talls.

My friend loves his Michelin MS2 tires in that size.

I had some 225/75R16 MS1s when I got my 4Runner, but I only drove on them for a few weeks so idk if they were any good or not.

Well then dont get an A/T tire then. Look at an AT tire then the Michelin LTX M/S2. When you see the design difference that is where your noise is. . Honestly people who complain about road noise are silly. You have a 20 year old vehicle. The NVH dampening in these vehicle from this time period SUCK! I have those Grapplers you want to get and let me tell you what, compared to the M/S2's I HAD on my truck, @ 70mph you can here a difference with the grapplers. Do you want to know what I did? I turned my radio up because it wasnt that bad. It wont be like some of the super lifted vehicle with mud tires where you can hear them on the otherside of a highway driving. I was worried about that too but I was surprised. Get the grapplers and wheel on :driving:

Just bought 265/70/R16 Michelin Defender GTX M/S (replacement for MS2s) and they're really ****ing nice.

Gotta go back for a rebalancing though--got a new vibration at 65-70mph that didn't exist, but the tires themselves are super comfortable and quiet.

There's an old pair of Mich ltx m/s2 that came on my runner when I bought it. I'm trying to kill them fast as I can for new all terrains, but they won't die! Handle everything I throw at them with ease: snow, ice, rain, mud, sharp rocks, you name it. They probably only have 4/32" left and they drive like new.

The Michelin LTxs might actually be the tire I will go with. As much I'd like to go with a more aggressive tire, I don't think I could justify it with my goal of maintaining factory MPG and road noise. Thanks for all the input, fellas. Love this forum.

To clarify, I'm not too concerned with road noise since this truck has a lack of sound deadening (as you mentioned), but I think I'm going to cross them off my list. They might be too loud for me.

I actually replaced my shocks with Bilstein 4600s last year. I plan to go with OME 906s in the rear with '99 talls in the front this summer. Just hoping the truck will have a level look with the '99 talls in the front.

[MENTION=112124]ToyotaBrah[/MENTION] I want apologize, I wasnt having the best of days, I didnt mean to come off like an a$$hole. Another short story when I bought my 4runner last may it had the LTX M/S2 on it. I took it offroading and aired down to 30psi, I didnt get stuck at all. I went through mud and water holes and up some technical rock faces with ease. Now the AT tire everyone is talking about is the Michelin LTX A/T2 not the Michelin LTX M/S2

Another vote for Michelin LTX for a pavement pounder. Wear like iron, handle/ride good, pretty darn decent in snow and ice.
