Red 4runner falls 1,000 ft off cliff near Moab, Utah!

For a manual trans I know to leave it in first, but what about an automatic? What's the proper gear? Sorry if this is a dumb question but I have lived in the Midwest my whole life, no hills to contend with, so I never would have given any thought to just putting it in park.

Sounds like maybe they got out with the trans in neutral...or it could have even been in drive. When I did alot of rockcrawling, I'd see guys do that all the time. They'd be sitting waiting for someone in front of them for so long with their foot on the brake (in drive) and then all of a sudden jump out of their rig to help spot or something..and their rig starts to drive away without them. Wasn't as big of an issue since the t-case was already in LO and you were in very large rocks..so it would need some decent momentum to get too far from where it started.

If they stopped to take a pic and the passenger got out leaving the driver with their foot on the brake...they may have just jumped out "real quick" and neglected to shift to park first. Dunno...just a wild way of trying to validate the cause :lmao:

Ha you guys said stuff here that i didnt even think of! I like the insurance theory and asking for the wheels, but unfortunately it looked like the front rims took some significant damage and are bent. Can anyone guess the model/year? I think it says SR5 4WD on the door and judging by the fog light holes it might be a 2004 or 2005 model?

I think you're right. Salsa red was introduced in 2005 according to this chart: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/4th-gen-t4rs/14590-4th-gen-4runner-color-chart.html And the fog lights were changed in 2006 so this has to be a 2005 SR5 4runner.

It may just be the light but it sure looks like the engine was removed on the ride down the canyon wall. Certainly, the radiator is gone.

I think we can all agree that if it was a V8 it hit the canyon floor faster. That extra weight certainly helps with vertical acceleration!

Actually if you guys look closely at the back of the 4runner in the second to last photo it looks like there's a black rear cargo cage divider thing. Not sure though...

I think it's actually not an '05, but a '06-09. It's got chrome door handles and the front bumper is different. It's got the dip for the grille.

This is second wrecked 4th gen while wheeling. There's another one of a silver '06 Limited that got high centered and wedged up against some rocks here somewhere.

It's not the nav unit, it is an owner claiming another case of Toyota uncontrolled acceleration!!
