READ FIRST!
Hey guys, so i just finished my 3,000 mile road trip to southern Utah (http://www.toyota-4runner.org/4th-gen-t4rs/96609-just-finished-3-000-mile-road-trip-southern-utah.html) where i also did some easy off-roading for the first time. If anyone is familiar with off-roading near Moab i was on my way to the Chicken Corners trail. Anyways, the road that led to the trail start was an unpaved winding road that cut through some cliffs. While i was on this road i saw a tow truck and a ranger police truck on the edge of the cliff trying to pull out something. I did't know what happened yet, but suspected that a car fell over the cliff (the drop off looked like it was about 1,000 ft into a valley below). When i was coming back up the same winding cliff road that the tow truck was on i saw them pulling out a salsa red 4runner. The only way i could tell it was a 4runner was from the wheels. It was that badly smashed up. All the lights were missing and the entire roof was caved in.
I saw two men and a woman talking with the ranger and figured they were the owners (you can see them in some of the pictures) I ended up talking to the ranger and he told me that apparently they stopped to take some pictures at the cliff edge but forgot to put the 4runner into the proper gear and it ended up tumbling all the way down to the bottom of the valley below.
Miraculously no one died because they were all outside of the vehicle at the time it rolled off the cliff.
The first picture here shows a view of the cliff edge and the valley below about 50 feet away from where they rolled. The second picture has a red circle showing the tow truck pulling out the 4runner and the rest of the pictures are crops of giant photos i took of the smashed rig. If i saw this on my way to the trail i probably would have turned around because those cliffs were already scary enough without the smashed up 4runner being pulled out:
