Red Clay Rally 2018

Last year's rally consisted of 108 vehicles on 46 teams traveling 780 miles through the Appalachian mountains of TN, GA, and NC. 4 teams of 11 vehicles did not finish due to various reasons including mechanical failure, feeling the trails were too complex, and other unknown reasons.

Maps were given in digital form via GPX file.

I am a little late to let y'all know about Rally 2018 as the registration is nearly halfway full. This year's rally will most likely not be a TSD rally, it will be another format (more on that later) The rally will be held on June 1-3, 2018.

Teams will Ned to be 2 to 4 vehicles. NO solo vehicles.

A team from Venezuela/Bolivia won the rally last year and is returning this year to defend the title.

Cruisers, land rovers, Tacoma's, hummers, and even a bronco competed this year.

Please dont allow stuff like in this video, this is how FS roads get closed and it makes the offroading/overlanding community look really bad.

You shouldn't take bypasses or cut throughs or blaze your own trails or create obstacles on USFS roads unless you want to see those roads closed.

This is confusing.... So the Venezuela/Bolivian team won in 2016 and are back to complete this year? But this year has already been run? Did they win?

I checked out the rally website and still don't know exactly what this event is about. Is this like a guided adventure or a competition? How do you win?
Sorry if I sound critical, but the vids look like good fun, just not sure why I would pay $150 to drive public roads. More details please!

You sure it's not a actual trail? There were many optional routes during the rally and this could have been one of them. I wasn't there, but I know many of the guys in this video and I doubt that that they would blaze a trail.

Timed stages, you get points deducted for going too fast or too slow. Each day has multiple stages where each vehicle must check-in and record time.

$150 isn't bad compared to what some tours are charging for trips on public roads.

The Venezuelans won the first ever rally. 2017. The fee covers the time taken to map over 780 miles of trail, and road. It covers everything from fuel (which is used when driving the route twice) it's a time/speed/distance rally. Which means that the time closest to my time wins. They're given the distance and the average speed and must determine the perfect time. It is a competition with over $4000 in prizes to be won by the top 3 teams. I opened registration to the previous competitors a week early, and registration filled nearly halfway... In 7 days. They had a blast, and I think you would too. It's a challenge, and super competitive, but everyone gets along.

This trail WAS part of the 2017 USGS Topographal map that I was using to map the rally. It was a legal trail and anyone who says otherwise can email me for the map overlay and I'll share them.

I'd like to comment so i can keep up with this. It looks very entertaining and challenging. I'm assuming you wouldnt want to attempt this with anything less than a 3" or bigger lift, tires and roof racks for gear. Most of those rigs look pretty advanced compared to a stock Toyota. (i know im stating the obvious here, but trying to gauge how much work i need to do on my rig to compete, she's stock right now).

There were a few stock vehicles to compete, one being a 2017 trd pro, which finished perfectly. The other was a Land Rover LR3 which forfeited on day 1.

That's good to know, but a TRDP is slightly more trail ready than a TRD OR. I'll have to make some modifications and maybe try next year. Thanks.

Sorry just seeing this.

No teams cannot be put together at the site. All teams will need to be arranged well before the rally. Passengers can be added later, and even the day of the rally.

Well I gave early registration privilege to last years competitors and nearly half the spots were taken on day 1 of opening. With that said, there are plenty of spots left but it comes in spurts, some weeks zero sign others 6 or 7 do. We've got 2 people looking for teammates on Instagram one is a 5th gen 4runner and one is a 3rd gen.

If anyone needs a teammate let me know and I can try to arrange it.

Thanks for bringing this back to me. I consulted the boss and that consult turned into a baby due in May, haha. Needless to say, I will not be making this year. Definitely on board for next year!

Maybe after I finish my college courses I can find a job that will allow me the resources and time off to enjoy offroading more. Hopefully I could participate in the 2019 run if I am not ready before the 2018 run.
