Refueling Issue, But Not the Usual One

I've seen numerous threads while researching this issue about the charcoal canister vent being broken or clogged. The common symptom appears to be that the gas pump keeps repeatedly shutting off the entire time you're adding gas. My deal, and it's happened at multiple stations, is different - the pump works normally until the tank is nearly full but shuts off early.

When I bought my 4R in 2014, the gas gauge usually went a bit over the "Full" tick mark and the range display was often in the 390 to 400+ range. The range number has steadily declined (though my mileage remains consistent as measured by distance traveled divided by gallons to fill). But recently, gas pumps have been operating normally until it's nearly full, then shutting off at a point where the gauge needle doesn't quite reach the full mark and the range shown is 330-335 miles tops. I tried restarting the pump a couple of times ("topping off") and was able to put a couple more gallons in (though the pump keeps shutting off the whole time) and the range then bumps up to 370 or so.

Ideas, comments, suggestions? Any chance cleaning or replacing the canister vent valve might help with this? TIA.

What happens if you back the nozzle off a little bit?

I wish I had answer...but having the same issue...

I highly doubt it's the charcoal canister, it's not inline with the filler neck and tank, check the long rubber hose from the gas cap neck and the tank to see if it's collapsed or pinched in some way slowing the flow to the tank.

This isn't the best for the environment, but have you tried to get enough gas in that it's just barely coming up out of the filler neck?

When that has happened to me on various vehicles it has been a venting issue. Even at different fill levels it would do it. I would give a good look at your vent to see if there is any crimps, bends, or anything that slows that vent down.

I had this issue with my Land Rover.
It took just over 20 minutes to fill it up, even with pulling the vapor recovery piece back on the nozzle. I was getting 10ths of a gallon each pull. Let the fuel settle to the tank and try again, rinse and repeat.

I siphoned gas out of it in the aftermath of a hurricane, and something was damaged in the fill/vent as others have said. Replaced it and all was well.
I never cut it open to figure out the cause. And I never had to siphon gas out again.

At the time, I was thinking there was some kind of check valve in there in case of roll-over that was moved/damaged.

Refueled yesterday taking the suggestion from toyoman25 to back the nozzle out slightly and that seemed to help. I had calculated the approximate number of gallons it should take based on my average MPG; the pump stopped pretty close to the approximation, the needle went to the usual place (just past the F tick mark), and the range came up 374 miles. I'll see what happens next time and will also check the canister vent when I have a chance.

Bluesky 07 Sometimes these nozzles are to long and the cut off is triggered as they don't allow the air to vent. I have had to do this a only a few times, it is a rare thing I would think now days. Glad to hear it worked out better this time for you.
