Regearing questions

Hi all

Just wanted to get some community input on regearing, for those of you who have. Tell me what tires and gears you started at, what tires and gears you ended at, and the changes to power and fuel economy.

Currently I have 31" tires on stock 4.10's. I'm lucky to pull 16-17mpg in the city. There's a pretty decent gap in the gears - a 3000rpm shift puts you under 2000rpm in the next gear.

I'm thinking about regearing during my winter break. I could essentially go 4.56 or 4.88 for the same price. With 4.88's, I'd be ready for 33's when the time comes, but i don't know if current 31's on 4.88's is ridiculous, i.e. 4000rpm at 70 kind of stuff.

Thanks for the input

First off 16-17 isn't bad.

The drop in rpm has to do with your transmission gearing not the axle.

You will lose top end with lower gears but gain more bottom end torque. I wouldn't suggest 4.88's unless you don't travel on the interstate and are planning to go to with 33's soon. If it were me I would save up and get everything you need at once or rounded up and just keep the 31's and 4.10's for now.

i really want someone to come out with a 2 speed rear end! they had them on the old school fords and i think some old dodges. i want someone to make a rear diff that can shift from 4.88's to 4.56's. just for highway driving, that way when you go on a long drive you can shift that and it would drop your rpms considerably.

yep, best to collect everything, an then regear.

but, i went, from stock to 33's. ran those for years. i dont remember the mileage i was getting. but power was ****.
then i went to 35's. that was really ****. so i went to 5.29's. been running that combo for about 10 years now.

i changed my speedo gear, according to my gps, its less than 1mph off, and ive seen 21mpg in town. my average is 17-18 tho.

If you have patience, I can get you a sweet deal on some 4.56 or 4.88 gears early in the new year. I'm grabbing the 4.88's out of SVD's part out. Assuming I can put my locker on with the 4.88, you can have my 4.56 fairly cheap. If I can't use his 4.88 with my locker then you can get those fairly inexpensive whilst I get new 5.29's in which case the 4.56's will still be available.

I'm currently running 33x12.5 with the 4.56. While I do lose a little top end power and some MPG, it rides nice. 4.88 with 33's would be much more better. 5.29 with 35's would be divine.

Obviously he would get dibs, but if he is not interested in the gears I might be.

So which gearing would get the best mpg with 31's?

Not trying to hi-jack, just beginning to understand the complexity of gearing.

Likely 4.56's. I believe some 2nd gens with standard 22re, manual, and 31's got 4.56's. Many auto trans 3.0s got 4.88's.

The gearing is the ratio of driveline spins to wheel rotations if i'm not mistaken. For example, an axle ratio of 4.10 would mean the driveshaft spins 4.1 times for every full wheel rotation. Hence, if you change this, cruising RPM's in all gears will change

That's what they make overdrive gears for--same effect, but it's in the transmission, where they already have a shifter mechanism. No need to bother with a special set-up in the diffs.

And plenty of trans' have multiple overdrive gears at this point. Choice!

still not worth it for 31's.

I dunno - I noticed a huge difference going from 4.30s and 31s (undergeared) to 5.29s and 33s. Normally you'd be right, but with these little 22REs anything that takes you even slightly out of your powerband can bring the suck.

I'd choose 4.56 for a manual trans on 31s.

31's, and 4.10's were great.

it wouldnt be worth the gear oil, and time to swap them out.

and, 4.56's, and 31"s is overgeared, and would likely see a decrease in mileage.
