I just wanted to just send out a heads-up that REI is about to have their annual Anniversary/Members sale from May 20-30. I'm sure there is a large percentage of REI members on this forum but just wanted to throw it out there for the others. I'm just mentioning it because I have seen a bunch of posts recently on roof racks (Thule/Yakima not Gobi, baja k9, etc.) and cargo boxes. They also carry Yeti coolers and just about any other type of outdoor item you can think of. Almost everything is 20-30% off for members (which is a nominal fee but pays for itself in the savings and rewards divedends you get back). If you are looking to get Thule, Yakima or other outdoor products you might want to check it out.

As a note have no affiliation with REI other then I love the company and became a member when buying a roof rack over 15 years ago. I have been shopping there for years and not having one in Florida is one of the most disappointing things about the state..lol.

They do have one in Florida. Here in Jax.
 
I worked at REI in high school, great company. If you ever have specific questions just ask for whoever on staff is the expert, there's a lot of talent working there but you don't always get them when browsing the aisles.. everyone's usually friendly and tries to help though :)

A quick Google search led me to expedition portal and some posts about the CEO of Rei being given the nod for national parks and services, and rei has historically been opposed to overland activity etc. So it is assumed that having that kind of national influence will not bode well for us.

Not as lifetime as it used to be, as in my solar panel failing yet AGAIN, last time they hooked me up, this time no go.

They do sell RTT's now as well. :wink2:

On the land closure, money talks, join clubs/orgs that advocate on your behalf for trail access.
 
They just had a few garage sales at some of the locations here in the Bay Area. I picked up a set of Yakima Q-Towers for $40 (Originally $156.93), Yakima Skybox 18 Carbonite for $225 (Originally $439.19) and a Rapid Shelter 10x10 Canopy for $11 (Originally $179.95) Everything was pretty much brand new and returned within a week of the original customer purchasing the item.
 
hmmm....I've been wanting one of those bear containers for backpacking or a can of bear spray....This will be my chance to pounce before they sell out! If they sell out it will be un-bear-able.

Only 1 year now.

Too many people were abusing the 'Return Every Item / REI rental program'

When I backpack or camp, we always throw all the food in a bag, tie some rope to that bag, and sling it high into a tree a ways from our campsite.

So does a bear canister allow you to just keep it at your camp site? Is it worth the weight penalty?

Your forum pic leads me to believe that you should be keeping all food and trash in the tent. Bears? **** bears.... We got revolvers, gunsmoke, whisky, whores and a whole lot o manifest destiny.

Depends where you're at. Here in California we have black bears that have learned through experience to associate humans with food. That and a lot of parks don't trust individuals to set a proper bear line. Either way many parks mandate canisters now. I'm diabetic and can't take the risk of loosing my food so I always take a can when backpacking in bear country regardless if it's mandated or not.

I haven't seen that bearikade can before, looks sweet. I've got the bearvault can, has a wider opening and is lighter for the size than the garcia one (REI carries both).

Ah okay, that makes more sense. Canisters aren't mandatory, but I still run into fools in the backcountry here (Alberta) who think that because they "only have dry food" that they can keep their food in their tent. I suppose we just have relatively fewer people heading into the backcountry.

Your post is a bit misleading and not addressing the root cause. They give millions to help preserve our nation's lands so future generations can enjoy it. Why? because far too many AHoles have never heard of the concept of Tread Lightly or Leave No Trace! They aren't shutting down land because they hate ORV. I know one of the REI VPs very well and he is an avid Jeep enthusiast.

As far as the sale goes it is a great deal! REI is a great company that backs the gear they sell. Got my Member flier and coupons in the mail yesterday!
