Reinstalling roof rack after painting...

I'm planning to remove my side rails so that I can paint them. Is there anything special I need to do when I reinstall to avoid leaks (silicon around white plastic tubes, new felt pads, etc.)?

The OEM sealing washers are ridiculously thin and worthless. I used a silicone caulk when I put on my TRD rack (same mounting locations). I've never had a leak.

Did you let the caulk cure before reinstalling the rack, or did you apply the caulk & immediately install the rack?

I have removed and reinstalled the stock roof rack 3 times (maybe more, but only 3 I can remember right now) so far and never done anything but tighten the stock bolts. It sits outside in Texas downpours year round and has never leaked. It has been on and off pouring for the last 3-4 days and still dry inside.

Did you let the caulk cure before reinstalling the rack, or did you apply the caulk & immediately install the rack?

For silicone, you need to tighten the mounting bolts before it sets up so it will squish around the holes.
