Release bearing or input shaft?

I just rebuilt the 3RZ in my 4Runner, when I installed the new motor I put in a brand new HD clutch from Marlin. ( btw Marlin has been fantastic, no complaints at all, absolutely top notch customer service )

Here's the problem. Either the release bearing or the input shaft on my W59 Trans has begun to scream pretty good. It screams with the clutch disengaged ( foot OFF the pedal ) but stops when you push the pedal in. That usually would indicate a pilot bearing or an input shaft bearing.

The strange thing is this; if I leave the truck running, in neutral, and move the clutch arm by hand so that the release bearing touches the clutch fingers, the screaming stops. If I move the release bearing further away from the clutch fingers until it loses contact with the pressure plate, same result the screaming stops.

Honestly I really don't wanna hear the words "new transmission." But if it quacks like a duck, well....

I spoke with Marlin, they seem to think my Trans is done, and it very well could be. It does have 200k miles. But it shifts fine and feels fine any other way I can externally test it.

Any ideas or experience with this kind of thing?

Everytime I have had the issue you are explaining it was the throw-out bearing/release bearing on the clutch. Im pretty sure its not your input shaft bearing, but the input shaft and bearing can be replaced without rebuilding entire tranny as long as it looks good inside.

Did you use a new throw-out? If you did I always use OEM. Even aftermarket companys like ACT and others seem to have noisy bearings. I always used an OEM with my clutches I installed. I also packed the bearing with grease which is not needed but we always did and so did the local race trans shop here. Also grease the contact points between the fulcrum and fork contact on the bearing. This should fix the issue you are experiencing.

Thanks for the reply!

I agree that it seems to be the release bearing.

It is a brand new (1500 miles or so) NSK bearing included with the Marlin clutch kit.

My main reason for asking this is because the truck is my daily driver. I can't reasonably pull the trans and open it up just for fun. Marlin doesn't wanna replace the bearing unless I pull it out and verify that it's bad. This ends up with the same result, I can't pull it apart and then wait for them to decide what to do. If I separate the engine and trans I wanna have the new part right there, ...because doing it twice is like doing it once for free...

There is really not issue driving it the way it is. Its just annoying.

I you decide to drop the trans to replace it, go buy a new OEM unit before hand.

then whether its bad or not, you have a replacement on hand. if it is bad, you just send it back to Marlin for a refund, instead of replacement.

Cant post a new thread for some reason. My 4runner has this squeaking when I am in neutral (50/50 if it does it) or rolling very slowly, or letting out the clutch (almost always). The squeak goes away when I rev the engine.

It doesn’t match pilot bearings exactly but I don’t know what else it could be. It’s been getting more noticeable for almost a year, and I had been good with changing fluids and greasing my drive shafts every oil change or so.

My transmission is W59 on 4 cylinder 4wd with 230k miles, transmission hasn’t had anything done besides fluids.
