That is sad...even at the last year of the C-class, it still stunk! 
I actually once thought about getting one of the last '07 C-class (with tons of discounts) as a cheap commuter car (since Lexus and BMW were too expensive), but i guess that i am happy that i did not. Hopefully, the new '08 C-class will crawl up the chart a bit. I will probably get an Accord or Camry next or an Acura TSX...and a Sienna. 
What does the asterisk after the name mean?

It's not that cheap (like what i drive now), but that's about the price of a Camry 4-cyl XLE or a base V6. My local MB dealer had a whole bunch of them on the lot prior to the release of the new C-class...and were more than willing to deal to get rid of them. And if i went the used car route, then there's even more available for cheap. I was thinking that i could get one since they have been out for so long...surely, MB must have fixed all the "issues." Based on above graph, i was being too optimistic!
Everyday, i am glad that my G-wagen is not made in Germany or Alabama!

I would buy ANYTHING damn near that was from Acura after having owned our Integra GSR. They are straight up excellent vehicles. It's like a poor man's luxury car, very well appointed, super reliable, you have the "prestige" of owning a known luxury brand, but without dropping 50K to start, and add options from there. I think they spend more time on the overall quality on Acura vehicles than some of the creature comforts. My GSR went 133K miles on the original brakes, one clutch, and a radiator. That's it. And the clutch at 100K was still fine as far as friction material, just that a small metal piece broke from the center on it and wedged beteen the flywheel and clutch disc, so I could not disengage the transmission lol (interesting drive home, in rush hour traffic, through Fort Worth.....) Other than tires, oil changes, belts, and tune up once around 80K, it never once left me walking.
As for the Maxima on the "upscale" list, laughable lol. Decent car, but nowhere near upscale lol.
Hoping our 4Runner will treat us as good as the Acura did. We've not owned a vehicle that has run that great, for that long, with only a couple repair items that might not be considered "maintenance" as in just normal wear items

I agree, luxury cars are supposed to be quiet. I am pretty surprised by that complaint though. I only sat in the TSX at the dealer and never took one out for a spin. We have a 2007 MDX in the family and so far no complaints. The road noise in that car is not too noticeable. Regardless, you still can't beat the price and reliability of the TSX and TL.

The TSX does give you a luxury (near-luxury) name, better customer service, nicer interior (design & quality), HIDs, and better handling. Although the handling is nice, i am not sure the TSX has enough over a Camry V6 to justify it...at least, not in my eyes.
Or take the new Accord...it has more power, almost as nice interior, lots more room, and handles somewhere between TSX and Camry.
In other words, it's tough to buy a TSX when the competition is so strong, even within Honda corporation! Of course, this also means that you have a lot of room to haggle the price down.

I agree. The TSX is underpowered compared to the competition. On the other hand, I think the Accord is better compared to the Acura TL. From reading the specifications, the Accord is a much larger vehicle than the TSX and just slightly larger than the TL. As for the Camry, the V6 is FAST! I am not too thrilled with the overall design though. Now the 2-door Accord is really a sharp looking car.
