Relocating to Portland OR Looking for pointers

Like Mike said, no different than any other large metropolitan area. The west coast downtowns are probably worse though.

If you're into outdoors, few areas better than the PNW. With the coast so near, and the the Cascades the other way, you'll not want for areas to explore. The ocean and beaches will be a LOT different than what you are used to. Yes the sun will come out, sometimes... I have gotten to the point where I don't care for sunny days in the winter, the sun is down low to the horizon and it makes for a lot of glare, I'm north in Seattle so its pronounced a little more. Winters can seem to drag on with the clouds and overcast, but it makes the spring and summer that much batter. The PNW is actually the driest area of the country in late summer, less rainfall than anywhere else. The bad of that is we are starting to really have a horrible time with forest fires.

Watch out for liberal progressives, socialists, and members of the communist party that want to take your freedoms away. I live in the People's Republic of California so I know a thing or two about this. If you lean conservative, realize your vote won't mean shit anymore. I don't know about Portland's view on homeless, but if it's anything like Seattle, you'll be in for a little shocker. This video is a good watch: YouTube

What I've learned from being a firefighter in the City of Salinas is if you pander to the homeless, guess what, you will have an even bigger homeless problem. Tent cities and the filth and problems that comes with it is what you'll get. Most of these "homeless" people are substance abusers and aren't looking to improve their situation. They're just people looking for their next high and are willing to steal to support their habit because there really isn't much punishment going on in these cities either. The liberal leadership in these cities tie the hands of the cops so they can't do much about it. What you get is a cesspool of shit you get to see everyday in the city you live in. Currently, San Francisco and Seattle are #1 and #2 respectively for the amount of property crimes per 100,000 in population. The common denominator with these two cities is there liberal policies towards the homeless. So, make sure you don't leave valuables in your car when you go into the downtown areas because there's a real good chance some shitbag is going to do a smash and grab.

I know this comment has nothing to do with what the OP was inquiring about and would be better left for the off-topic area of the forum but I figured I'd shed some light on what you're about to experience that you possibly didn't experience in Miami. Some might think I'm a dick for posting this but I've earned the right to my opinion because I regularly respond to their overdoses and fight the fires they start in their bum camps wading through all their filth to put out the fires. I'd say at least 20-30% of our calls for service are for the homeless. When we're picking up the fallen down drunk off the sidewalk for the 20th time or bringing back another from the dead from a heroin overdose, somebody else that's not purposely pickling their body with drugs and alcohol might need our help and now that help is delayed because we're busy with this shitbag.

Anyway, enjoy your new life in Portland. Hopefully the view from your windows isn't a nasty tent city homeless camp.

If this upsets you then hopefully you didn't move to Oregon or Washington. Both states have some sort of government provided healthcare for individuals who have not met the 5-year immigration bar, and have a qualifying medical condition. Just like California, there are restrictions on the coverage.

I'm well aware of the political situation in Oregon - and when we took our trip out, we did see the homeless in downtown. Not overly concerned.

Was mainly looking for info on pitfalls re: 20 year old truck in a place that does emissions testing, and potential rust-proofing.

I love that 4Runner dudes seem to be in the extremes of the political spectrum.

One option if you're concerned about emissions testing for your rig is living across the river in Vancouver/Camas/Longview, WA. Washington is stopping emissions testing Jan 2020. Just did my last emissions tests this year. :trophy:

Hey, we'll I guess you'll fit right in then. I complain about California but there could be worse areas to live for sure. I live in the Bay Area which is one of the most unaffordable housing markets in the world but luckily I bought my house 20 years ago so I'm in good shape in that regard.

The thing that would kill me about the area you're moving to is the weather like some people have mentioned. There's no surprise why there's high alcoholism, drug addiction and suicide rates in Portland and Seattle because there's times where you rarely see the sun. I'm spoiled where I live because I see the sun most of the year. I think the dreary overcast days and constant pissing rain would drive me nuts because I'm a huge outdoors person that's been spoiled by California Bay Area weather my whole life.

I usually have no problem with people that lean left. Because I live in the People's Republic of California, a lot of my friends are Pinko Commies too. But, anyone who's loonie far left or far right are a little hard to stomach. Because I've spoken up from time to time when I can't take a friend's constant liberal political Facebook comments anymore, I get unfriended because of it. Facebook friends aren't real friends but I have lost some real friends due to my opposing views which is pretty petty and sad. If you're a good person, I'm going to like you regardless of your political stance.

Anyway, good luck with your move. Regardless of the weather you'll have to deal with, the West Coast of the United States has so much to offer, especially for those that like to explore the outdoors. Just make sure you buy some good rain gear because you're going to need it and stock up on some happy pills for the times when you haven't seen the sun in weeks.

Lot's of comments regarding the non-existent sun in the winter up in the left corner. What I always tell everyone from out of town is that, during the winter, if it's raining in the city, it's snowing in the mountains. Learn to ski, snowshoe, ice climb, and/or snow wheel and you'll love it when it rains during the winter. There's some great places real close to Portland to have some fun in the winter time!

It's a safe city. But they will steal your shit, lol. Seriously too many "my laptop got stolen out of my car" incidents to not just play it safe.

Oh, and don't bother with the suburbs... Live as "close in" as possible in PDX for the full experience. It's really a great town.
