So I had a guy come by the house with all the gauges to trouble shoot the 4runner. It is still running a little rough now and again sporadically since I got the bad gas even though I drained the tank and changed the filter. Pressure was good he said. I forget the exact number.
We tore it all apart. Compression on all 6 cylinders where all exactly 150. He tried to get a read on the timing and he was having trouble. I now know why the new belts still squeal. He said the Harmonic Balancer was wobbling and the rubber boot was sticking out. He said it wasn't a camshaft issue he didn't think but I need a new balancer. Not sure how they wear out but I guess anything with a rubber fitting does. He checked all the plugs and one was really dark. We pulled the plug wires one at a time and when we got to where the dark one was the engine ran the same with or without the plug wire on it. We tried swapping plugs and it didn't make a difference.
Also, two plugs showed a tiny amount of green. I guess that means anti-freeze meaning a head gasket at some point will need to be done. Really faint color so he wasn;t concerned. He thinks it is the injector which is where I was before he showed up. At least now I know the compression is ok if not great. We didn't have the exact spec but he said they should all be close to the same. I found a guy on Ebay selling remanned injectors without a core charge on an honor system for about 140 bucks. Seems like a good price. There are others selling the 4 hole deals for the same but I want to stick with the standard I think. The guy had a pile of good reviews. Anything I should worry about buying injectors on Ebay?
Also, unfortunately when I was unloading my kids at the daycare a school bus came screaming by and turned to fast and side wiped me. Then he ran. The bus service is a private company in this area. I had to go through VM to get through to anyone. The police made a report and wrote up a fleeing the scene. The adjuster came out and said he had one of the first ones in the mid 80's. Older guy and I thought great this is going to be ok. Then I asked about mechanical damage since the lady on the phone who worked for the Attorney General office told me to get two quotes. He said there is no way there is a mechanical issue and no way it hit the tire because the bus sits to high. Meanwhile my super clean bodied 4Runner has a gouge from in front of the tire through the wheel well and down to the tail light. It has a noticeable vibration now too. It may just be a wheel weight or something but how can the guy say it is not related? He also commented on value. I tried to find a book value and only NADA even has one. I found 4 on Autotrader and they averaged 5K and up for a 250K mile rust bucket. I know they can be found cheaper. When I mentioned that he said it would have to be a fully restored "Hot Rod" to be worth that much.
Awesome, so I had engine trouble, this d*(& to deal with and when I got the mail my lawyer managed to negotiate with my health insurance and now even though I had uninsured motorist coverage and was hit by a car running a red light and had full health insurance they feel they need to be reimbursed by someone. Since the auto insurance is denying it because though I was across 4 lanes before the lady ran the red and hit me I should have been watching for cars as I walked across the street in the cross walk. Now the insurance is saying they understand the hardship so will settle for 65K. What the heck have I been paying all these premiums for?
Sorry had to vent on that one for a minute. Anyway, back to the injectors I would send mine out to be remanned but I need to try and finish all the repairs on a weekend so I can get back to work on Monday. I can't wait a week for a rebuild on them. On the plus side the guy that came by works for a shop and had a 99 4Runner with a 3.4 come in that was totaled but runs. Once the insurance company pays up I can have the whole SUV for 600 bucks.
