Remote start suggestions?

In addition to looking at a new radio, I'm also looking at adding a remote car starter. Preferably I'd like to have something I can use my existing key fob with, but I don't want to spend a tremendous amount and I'm guessing that more than likely I'll need to have an installer put it in.

Any suggestions?

using your existing factory remote is very common and actually easier for the installer. However, the downfall is if your keyless only works 5 feet from the car, then thats how far you'll have to be to activate the remote start. My suggestion is the Valet 561R... Standard remote-start keyless module and is made by DEI. I put them in all the time and rarely have a problem with them.

My oem remote start works from 100+ feet away and even through several walls. Would the remote start through my oem key fob still work the same distance? What button would you press on the oem fob to activate the remote start?
 
I have the Python system installed back in '04, they could NOT get the rear window to work. Then again the alarm was from 2001, it was installed on our previous vehicle the Sienna.
 
alright... I don't know why a 01 system couldn't get the rear window to work. It seriously isn't hard at all. I have a bitwriter a work so it helps with programming, but you really don't need it ot make the rear window work.

You would press the lock button 3 times to activate the remote start. Default it is 2 times but some factory remotes have the lock and unlock as the same button, so just as a precaution I set it to 3 lock pulses.
 
I'm not sure why they couldn't make the rear window work. If the car has any sort of AUX features then it will work, trust me. Each aux channel has a set of features you can program it to do..

Default for each aux channel is validality, which is basically when you push the button on the remote it sends the output for as long as you are holding the button.

The next is latched, which continues to send a signal until you push the same button again.

The next is latched and reset by igntion, which is exactly the same as before but it also ends the transmission when the ignition is turned on.

Last feature is 30-second timed...which basically once you hit the button it will transmit a signal for 30 seconds. This can be changed to any time with a bit-writer.


The only way your guy couldn't have got this right is if...

1. He tried using the output from the alarm to actually drive to motor.

The outputs on the alarm are generally 200 mA... that is not even close enough to try and drive a motor.

2. He didn't reverse the polarity on the output. Since you HAVE to use a relay in order to make this work, this is very unlikely. The outputs from the alarm are -, and you'll need 12V to power the motor.

3. He just doesn't know what he's doing.

You'll need a bitwriter anyway you look at it unless you window conviently takes 30 seconds to roll down. But trust me, this can be done.
 
Don't get me wrong I'm not trying to sound cocky, I'm just stating that on paper it can be done. I've been installing full time for over 3 years now and I did it with my 00' so I doubt it is much more difficult on other years. Plus they make window modules and the only vehicles that they never work with are GM vehicles.
 
I have a Viper remote start system installed. It has all of the capabilities of the normal remote, plus the ability to power the back window up. I don't remember the model number, but it has a quarter mile range. If you want it I can find it though.

You loose the chirping sound when you lock and unlock, so I had them make is so that if I wanted to I can have the horn sound when I lock it.

It cost just over $500 to install, and works great!


If I might suggest this to you. Go find a reputable installation shop in your area and spend the couple hundred extra to have your remote start and radio (I just responded to your other post as well) professionally installed. The 4runner is a complicated vehicle. It took the installers about 4 hours to install both the radio and remote start (8 hours total!!).

Taking your vehicle to a shop def. has its benefits...

The greatest is if the product fails, it isn't your problem. All you have to do is take the vehicle to them and they take care of the rest.

8 hours to put in a remote start and radio in a 4runner is a bit much, but hey if it works like it should then good deal. We generally also don't charge $500 to put in the remote start. Out the door ours start at like $300 and generally don't go over $375 unless its remote start/keyless and alarm. And yes that is a viper remote start.

Anything made by DEI is a great product. Audiovox/prestige stuff works out pretty well to and are manufactured in the same building. The cool thing with them is they just came out with this Flash Logic stuff where you can tap onto 1 wire and get tach, keyless, door trigger... etc. Makes the install a lot easier, but only dealers get the available software to actually be able to mess with flash logics.
 
Should the range be considerably different for the remote start function than for the lock and unlock on the factory key fob?

I used it this weekend and the distance seemed good enough to me, but I assumed that might change when using a different brand's remote start unit.
 
The Viper remote start has a better range. Put it this way I could start my car in a garage about a hundred feet away and through my neighbors apartment with it.

BTW mine is the Viper 160XV.
 
Any reliable aftermarket remote start/keyless is going to have atleast the same range as factory but for the most part a much bigger range.

You can add remote start to your factory remote...but it will only work as far as your keyless does.
