Remote Start

I'd like to hear from those of you with remote start what brands/models you prefer. Maybe you bought one but wished you went with another, or maybe you love the one you got! I'm in the market for one and I'm just looking for some advice.

One of my concerns with it is losing my OEM remote - will the one with the remote start duplicate all the OEM remote functions?

I have two 4Runner's in the family and both are now equipped with remote starters so I will try to help you out. Just to let you know, the OEM remote will not work once the truck is running no matter which remote start you put in. This is because the truck thinks there is a key in the ignition and the OEM remote functions are disabled once the key is in the ON position.

The one on my truck is made by Audiovox and only uses a tiny one button remote (only could control the remote starter). That means that if I don't unlock my truck before I start it, I must unlock it manually by putting the key in the drivers door. That is my only option. Personally, I like that better because I hate carrying around a lot of remotes. The remote for the starter is like 1/4 the size of the OEM remote.

The one in my parents truck is called Pursuit (I think it is made by Audiovox as well) but actually has a seperate remote for it. There are four buttons on the remote; lock, unlock, remote start, and an option button. The only thing is that remote cannot be programmed to control the rear window. It can only be used to lock, unlock, and start. The other difference is that the Pursuit remote works when the truck is running as well. Basically, if you use the back window function on the OEM remote a lot, you will be stuck carrying around two remotes.

Both remote starters basically work the same. The truck will stall out if someone tries to push the brake without the key in the ON position and the truck will stall out if you try to pop the hood without the key in the ON position. They both start the same by you have to push the button twice to start the truck and they will turn off if the truck is not used within a certain amount of time. It all comes down to the type of remote you want and what functions you use.

That is the exact model. I did not install any of them myself. I had a pro do it because I didn't feel comfortable messing around with all those wires.
 
I have remote start on my 2005 SE 4runner. the brand name is Auto Mate. I had it installed at the dealer. Comes with a 4 button remote and i have all the functions of he OEM remote pluse i can roll my back window up and down with it. Not sure if i have a panic button like the OEM though.

Interesting! It would be nice to be able to roll the back window back up with the remote.

Do you by any chance know the model number or know a place to get it? I'm having trouble finding that particular brand around the net.
 
I had one on my 03 SE Runner befor I turned it in. I don't remember the brand but I also had 4 buttons. They were lock, unlock, start, and the option button also. The installation place was able to use the option button to roll my back window up and down also. He said all the electrical is back there to do it but they don't because it could be a safety risk to roll it up without you in front of it as you never know who is sticking their arm/fingers in it.

Would you be able to unlock the doors if you'll carry two remotes: original OEM Toyota and remote starter one?
I like this idea. Could you tell what model # is it? How much does it cost you?

I do carry two remotes with me, the OEM and the remote start remote. The only thing is the remote start remote can only start the truck, it can't do anything else (there is only one button on the remote starter remote itself). As for the model number, I have two manuals that came with the unit. The model number for the remote starter itself is AS-9055T and the model number for the remote is AVX1B4S. If you want to see what the remote looks like, I can post a picture of it for you. It is really tiny.

Yes, please. If you can make also some pictures of antenna for it, that's will be great.
 
Here is a picture of the antenna and remote. I pasted everything into one file. If you want to see the other type of setup on my parents truck, just tell me and I will take a picture of that. I really like where they put my antenna because it is out of the way and nobody can see it.

LuxLink Remote Starter

If you are really concerned about maintaining your factory remote, you might want to give Luxury Motorsports a call. They have been known to produce a lot fun toys for Lexus', and as we all know a lot of this technology can be applied to Toyotas. Anyway, they've created what's called a LuxLink Remote Starter, which uses your factory remote as your remote starter -- all you'd do is press the lock button 3 times and voila!

I've talked to some of the techs over there and they said it can be applied to our 4th Gen 4Runners (I have an '04), so it might be worth checking out. Here is there link. Also, check out the remote top they have for the Lexus SC -- pretty money!

rear window roll down with aftermarket remote

WOW, i would DIE to know how the installers got the rear window to roll up and down with the aftermarket remote.

i have a 2002 SR5 sport edition, and i just purchased a viper 791xvr alarm with built in remote start and a multi function remote. i want to be able to roll the back window up and down with the aftermarket remote (i do not plan on carrying the factory remote anymore). i know where the wires are that energize when the rear window switch on the dash is pressed to roll the window up and down, but a 1 second pulse from an alarm module will not roll it all the way up or down. the pulse needs to be extended for the length of the roll up, or down. (i hope im making sense?)

toyota obviously installed one somewhere in the truck, seeing as how the factory remote will do it! i just have no idea where to find this module and how to go about tapping into it. does anybody here know, or can you point me in the right direction to get this task completed?

Thanks for that link! If this will work that would be absolutely IDEAL. I've emailed them for further info. I'm in SC, so having them install it is not an option. I've never enjoyed doing this sort of thing myself (tried once and gave up on an Accord) but I hate to pay a shop to do it if it's simple.

My factory remote for my '05 will not roll the back window back up - I have to do it from the dash button. Maybe this is just an '05 thing though?

yes, i know this. i was referring to the quote earlier in the thread from somebody who said that an installer told them that all the wiring and capibility is there and your able to do it, toyota just doesnt hook the "roll up" feature up for safety purposes. and i said i wanted to roll it up and down with my aftermarket remote, not factory remote :p

anybody know how?
