Wanna get remote start installed and know I am going to lose one of my keys and was wondering if 85 dollars sounds too much for additional key. This is what dealership quoted me.

Sounds about right. I called a couple of dealerships in the area and they quoted me form $69 to $129.

What a rip off,I hate to pay that. I guess I will be down to one key for a while.

They need a key because it has a chip in it, this chip must be close to the ignition for the car to start. So the installer will take one of you keys (with the chip) and hide it up under the dash somewhere so when the signal to start your car is sent it will recognize that a chip is present and allow your vehicle to start.
My question then would be, can't I get a key made without the chip and use that for the ignition. In theory with the other key "hidden" that will let you remote start, should that key also let you turn forward to the "run" position. I asked this question to the guy who will be installing mine in a few weeks, and this is what he said. Your key that gets "hidden" will allow the car to start, but not let you put it in drive. YOU MUST HAVE A KEY WITH THE CHIP TO TURN THE IGNITION TO THE RUN POSITION.
And that is close to the same price my local Toyota dealer wants for a new key.
Did this make any sense?

My understanding of remote starters for any vehicle with an immobilizer is there is a box which takes the factory chipped key and it sends a signal to the ignition lock that a key is present. A chipped key is needed to allow the vehicle to start, without it the immobilizer will prevent the vehicle from running. Ideally, a blank chipped key should be programmed and used. This way if a theif finds the box and key, they can't just start the truck and drive off with it.

My guess based on what the installer told you is that the key box for the immobilizer only sends the chipped key signal as long as the alarm or remote starter is keeping the truck running. The box for the key that I looked at has some length of wire that needs to be wrapped around the ignition lock to send the chipped key signal. (My Clifford will shut off the engine either when the brake is depressed to shift or if the remote start command is sent again. The engine will continue to run if the key turned to 'On', but at that point is Clifford is off and the key takes over like normal or a car without remote start.) I installed remote start on my daily driver, but it doesn't have an immobilizer system. We looked into installed one for my friend's '01 Accord, but because it was stick and the immobilizer complications he decided against it.

If you have a 99-02, you don't need the extra key. DEI makes an immobilizer bypass without using a key.
I found this very interesting product the other day you might be interested in. No key required for immobilizer plus added features from you OEM keyless entry.

DEI makes a few that don't require the use of a key... For 99-02 runners you can get by without a key but as far as I know there is not one for the newer models. Even some they claim where you don't have to use another key (the ford module for example) they are twice as much as a universal one because DEI already got a key from the company and placed it in the module.

NOPE. the car ran for 5 seconds and then just dies out.

Here is a run down of an imobilizer bypass...
Your key doesn't have to be close to the ignition when using an imobilizer bypass...you can put the damn thing in the back if you really wanted. An imobilizer bypass learns the "code" from the key and tricks the ignition into thinking that the key is there. Certain bypasses require a key, others don't....And the reason why you can't use just a plain old key after you've done this bypass is because it isn't a complete bypass... the imobilizer tricks the ignition everytime you remote start the car, but doesn't bypass the ignition entirely. See what I'm saying?
BUT there is a way you can use the $2 keys from walmart AND do a cheap bypass. It still requires a key with a chip, and all you have to do is zip tie the key to the key cylinder. It works, trust me. I've done it multiple times when the salesman forgot to price in the bypass and had to compensate.

Actually after realizing that the little trick i was trying didnt work, I figured..it was all for the better b/c that just means that the original factory security function was still there. So if a theif was able to make up a $2 key...he still couldnt steal the car. But...if i zip tied an actual key to the steering area, that means that either the theif could find that key and use it if i wasnt smart enough to cut the end off it...or...have a replica key with out the chip and still be able to start my car since the chip is in the key ziptied to the steering stem.
So all in all...im glad that I couldnt just use any key with out a chip to start the car while using an imobilizer for the alarm.
