Remote start

I've got a remote start system I'm planning on installing in my '87... I know all the things I need to hook to, but I'm not sure where the best place to wire into the ignition switch is... Has anyone else attempted, or better yet succeeded at installing one?

I'd be very interested in hearing an answer here as well. I live in Alaska, and plan to add remote start to my '90 4Runner before winter sets in later this year.

how do you use a remote start in a manual tranmission? wouldnt you have to have something to disable the clutch start?

I've got a unit off ebay that's designed for a manual transmission, including disabling the clutch start. It also has a special sequence you use to turn off the vehicle after getting out of the vehicle so that it knows it's out of gear and the e-brake is engaged.

You can get the starter and ignition wire under the dash on the drivers side where it comes from the ignition key and crosses the steering column. Don't use the "Scotch-locks" they give you. It's best to solder the wires on.

It was aboot (fake canadian accent) $60 shipped. It's a cheap one, but it'll give me keyless entry as well as the remote start... I think it'll be a bit tricky to find all the hookups...

with the remote start it always has to be in neutral and the ebrake on if you want to use it. not sure how that will work with the clutch cancel button. will you be bypassing this?

I believe the unit itself has the bypass built in, and I would assume that it connects to the clutch switch somehow. I haven't gone through the instructions very thoroughly, but it is designed for a manual transmission, so I would assume that would be accounted for.

most of the vehicles i have owned have been manual. only my 4runner has had the clutch start cancel button. i am interested to see the outcome of this.

Bought my system off of ebay after much research... maybe 6 months.. seller provided the vehicle/ year/ model/ transmission/ specific wiring diagram... went to my local audio shop and double checked the techs there... They said the only I had to be careful of was starting it while in gear. Since I'm the only one who drives, no problem...

Took all the starting portion of the wiring right off the back of the lock and tumbler-(ignition switch). Finding the wire for the individual doors was a pain... But I'm a perfectionist.
