Remote Start

I have a 2004 4Runner and I am looking at putting remote start. Does anybody have any suggestions of good brands or models to look into?

x2 I`m looking for the same thing! I`m leaning towards a Clifford 2-way remote start. It sends a confirmation to the remote that it started, and the remote will tell you when the truck is warm inside. There must be a preset temp sensor! So far 300.00 installed is the cheapest I`ve found!
 
I had a Clifford 2 way installed in my 04 last year and am plenty happy with it. The 2 way feature is sweet and system hasn't let me down yet. Would recommend it for sure.
 
Thanks for the input. Is there anyway a person could install this themselves? Or is it best to have it professionally done?
 
Unless your familiar with a how your truck goes together and electrical work you'd probly be better off taking it somewhere to be installed! Plus if something goes wrong with the product most companies will not warranty it if it's not installed by a trained tech!
 
If you have strong electrical knowledge, such as installing multiple amp, caps, and other electronics into vehicles then yes try it yourself. It is not that hard, however you are going to be splicing into wires close to airbag controls and have seen installers trigger them by accident. If you are unsure at all of your skill to identify and properly splice a wire then leave it to a professional. Now by professional installer I mean a shop with MECP (Mobile Electronics Certification Program) certified installers, that either solders and heat shrinks or uses high quality Butt connectors, and do not use T-Tap connectors.
 
Anything made by DEI (Directed Electronics Inc.) is usually pretty good. So Viper, Clifford, Python, Avital, and the list goes on. I would try to find the 2-way models that way you know when it starts. Their lastest and greatest boasts a 1 mile range. Thats the one I wanted last year but it wasn't going to be out in time for my trip. I ended up installing a Avital 4300 remote start which does what it is supposed to do except the range sucks and its only a one way system.

As far as installation goes cheapest is not always the best. Talk to the shop and installers first to see if they are rushed to finished jobs. Thats where corners get cut. Also, see if you can check out some of their past jobs and people who would recommend them. When the time comes to install don't rush the installer. Let them know what you expect from them.
 
that clifford with temp control sounds great! anyway, i went the super cheap route & got an basic Avital for 130 installed, its programmed into the stock keyfob, works fine for me. so they can be had for less $.
 
I would recommend a Matrix 3.3 system by Clifford. It includes a security system with remote start. BTW, are you single...I'll bet you're hot.
 
Do remote starts have a safety (carnapping) feature. Like if i turn on my engine, can someone just drive it away? :confused

Yes they have security built in. The second you press the brake to shift into gear it'll shut off the motor if the key isn't inserted in the ignition.
 
I'm looking for something similar for our 07 Sport.

Clifford sounds good. I asked the Dealer a couple of weeks back and they said anywhere between 6-900 bucks. They send it out to get it done since it's easier they say.

Now when you put the key in the ignition, do you have to start your car all over again or just put it the ACC or ON position?

You just put the key to the ON position and off you go. Another nice feature, if you need to run out just for a second, like running into a store. While the key is in the ignition, press the start button of your remote starter and it'll engage the remote start while the key is in (don't worry, the starter won't try to turn), then you can pull your key out of the ignition and the truck will keep running. It's a nice feature if you know you're just running in a store real quick so you don't have to turn the truck off and then re-start, it'll just keep running with the key pulled out. I find I use this feature all the time.
 
I just ordered a Python 1601 Remote Start and Alarm System.
Nothing too fancy... but according to the reviews good stuff. Let's see how it performs.

I was looking at this same model I think, since it works with the stock fob and doesn't require much wiring. My only concern is that the factory keyless entry would be disabled with the truck running so I couldn't remotely cancel the start or remotely unlock the doors. Do you have to go out and shut it off manually if you change your mind and use the key to unlock the doors?
