Hey guys I am taking the 4runner plunge, question, we have a venza with the factory remote start and it is awful compared to the aftermarket ones. Does anyone know if there is an aftermarket remote start that can intergrade with the toyota key fob so that you will only have one remote/fob to carry around ? Every I have spoken with telly me you will need the key fob and the remote for the autostart seperately. Thanks,

My TE has the Toyota remote start that was installed at the port and I only use the one key/remote to operate it.
I have factory remote start as well and it does suck. It works well, just shuts the car off when you hit unlock to open the door. All my other remote starts left the car running and you just put the key in and went on your way. Range and everything is fine with it, and not a huge deal, just more annoying that you start your car with remote start, then have to restart it when you get in....stupid.
Not sure about aftermarket. I know several manufacturers allow you to not carry a key fob and use an iphone to start the car. This may work for you, you can start with phone and not have to carry extra fob.

I have the Compustar unit with the DroneMobile which allows you to start, stop, lock, unlock (plus many more features) from your phone. No complaints at all!!

Remote start with factory key fob
I just got my remote start installed today. I went with the Code Alarm CA410 remote start and the Xpresskit PKALL bypass module. With this setup I'm able to continue using my factory key fobs for their normal use (unlock/lock doors and window rolldown) as well as the remote start feature.

did they say you cannot use your factory key fob to lock/unlock the door when the truck is running via remote start?
I got different setups form different installer.
"no key sacrifice but won't be able to lock/unlock by using the factory fob while truck is running via remote start" version; " have to sacrifice a key" version, after I told them someone in town doing remote start without sacrifice a key inside the truck, they offer me the "no need to sacrifice a key but auto shutdown when door open" version, it sounds like the factory remote start but you still need to purchase the aftermarket remote starter from them. I guess they just put different bypass module in it?
Personally, I need a remote start to fight the winter here in Alaska and I like the features of the aftermarket one, but I don't really trust either of them even they are all some kind of specialist. they might offer you the same brand same model remote start fob, but they won't let you know what brand or model of the bypass module they gonna put it inside your car and how they connect the module to the wire. I guess 99% of the problem caused by aftermarket remote start was related to the module/wire mess up.

I dont have personal experience with the Viper, but it is very similar to the Compustar that I have. Viper has always put out a good product, so I would assume that this product is no different. I have been using Compustar for about 10 years and have never had a problem. Both products are about the same $ but I think the Viper yearly service is a bit more than Compustar/DroneMobile.
Does the car shut off if you use the key to open the door? Or maybe you do not have a key if you have the limited trim.

I did go on the Compustar site for some info and the Viper site also. For canadians, compustar dealer is in Quebec, Viper is Future shop. I am not sure as to all the info as of yet, but I am going to check it out tomorrow and will post what I find out. What was needed for the Compustar to be placed into your TE?

Remote Start on Limited
Hey Guys, thanks for all the info, I am getting a Limited which has the push button start, which is why I am looking at any option that does not require me to keep the factory key fob and the remote start remote, no way do I want to have to carry both, I do have an iphone so the Viper and compustar/ Drone mobile sound good, but that sucks that there is a yearly fee, keep the info coming. I have my buddy at the dealership speaking with the shop in town that does remote starts, so when I get more info I will post it as well,

Viper Remote start
I have the 5701 Viper remote start doesnt work with my key fob but its not a big deal at all. The viper works great, the range is something like 1000ft, doesnt shut off if a door is opened, and will remain running for like 7mins or whatever you have it customized to. I definitely recommend it..

When my truck is on (with the remote start) the key fob is disabled. In order to get in, I have to open the truck with the actual key, but the truck does not turn off at that point. Once inside, I insert the key into the ignition, turn it to the "on" position, and step on the brake to turn off the "remote start" at which I can then get going. Works well for me.

they(dealer) ask $1000 for the limited in Alaska and told me because they need to put a key fob inside the dash which cost $500. Accessories installation section in TIS never mention any key/remote needed. But you need the techstream to run some diagnostic after installation.
My dealer wants $500.00 + tax to install the OEM remote start, though I am thinking of getting them to install the viper.
It is expensive to have the dealer install the remote, but Im not sure how much confidence I have in some flunky at best buy who probably makes ten bucks an hour tearing apart brand new 4runner, Ive heard too many horror stories of people taking new vehicles to places like that and having serious problems.
