Remote starter for 2014 Limited

They want to charge me $500 for a remote starter from the factory, but isn't it just a change in the car's programming? I mean there's already a receiver for the remote, and the car start is already push button, what other hardware could there possibly be? Am I crazy or am I right? Please tell me!

I think an actual module gets installed too...try searching for instructions on how to remote start with your factory remote. I read that several people here unknowingly got a factory remote start already installed on their ride straight from the dealer. Lucky!

It's a module. I ordered one on my 14 LTE and took delivery of a different truck and the dealer did a We Owe. A local mobile elex shop came to my house and did the install while I watched.
Good news is that it uses your factory fob. Bad news is that it cuts the ignition off when you touch the door handle. Starter does double duty. I do use mine on super cold mornings but in hindsight should have done an aftermarket.

It's a more complex process for vehicles with the push button start and "smart" fob and thus more expensive.

If you want to use the factory fob I believe you are limited to the factory remote start module. You will be in the same boat as I am in that your truck will simultaneously unlock and shut off when you touch the door handle.

If you don't care about the factory fob and would like to have a two way remote that confirms that you did start your truck when you pushed the button and that monitors the temp in the interior, I would suggest a DEI or Code Alarm unit that you would have professionally installed. I have installed both brands on my other cars and they work reliably. I have no data on their application in 5th Gen T4Rs.

Any recommendations on an aftermarket starter? Or should I go with the Toyota one?

Wish I had known about that setup. So you can start your car remotely with the factory fob and use the door prox sensor to open the door and drive away without a restart?

It was about $600 installed. There is an additional module that they need, that is included in that price.

To start your rig remotely you need to use the viper fob. You have to carry the Toyota fob as well since that is still your "key". The Toyota fob will still lock/unlock and once in proximity the handles will still work, they relay to the viper system. The vehicle still shuts off once a door is opened, (someone please correct me if I'm wrong) as far as I could find no system will bypass that "security" feature. I hope that answers your question.

Thanks for that info. I had heard the same wrt the car shutting off. I paid $600 for the factory alarm so the price was the same. The dealer sent the guy to my house to install it which was good. That Viper model though has some nice features that the stocker doesn't. If I had it to do again I'd probably do the factory though since I like having minimal keys/fobs in my pocket.
