Remote starter is working but anti-theift won't let the car start !?

Hi guys !

Can someone give me some hint about my little problem ? I know lots of you are very knowledgeable about 4runner in here !!

I have a remote starter to lock/unlock doors and to start the car... everything looks to work fine but when I try to start the car with the remote the motor won't light up...

I can ear the starter working for about 6 second and then it stops... Look like the anti-theft won't let the motor start. Because when im in the car and the key is in the ignition and I start the car from the remote it works ?!??

Im pretty sure that the anti-theft is causing the problem but how to solve that ?

Also second question on the same subject ... I have 2 remote for the car and when I bought it one had no more juice in the batteries. I did change the batteries but now when I push on the button nothing happen to the car. Look like it'S no more linked to the car... Is there a way to reprogram the remote ?

So you're using an aftermarket remote start I take it? I'm not entirely sure how many bypass the Immobilizer with the aftermarket units, or at least how they do it when done properly.

MANY shops/people will hack up an existing, programmed key and tape/glue the transponder to the ignition cylinder near the pick-up coil to allow for remote start. The problem is this bypasses the entire immobilizer system and someone could just have a key VIN Cut and take your 4Runner.

I know a couple members do stereo/alarm installs professionally and perhaps they could chime in?

1. Start with the key out of the ignition, drivers door is open all others closed and
drivers door is unlocked.

2. Perform these steps within 5 seconds.
A. Insert the key into the ignition(Do NOT Turn) Pull key out.
B. Insert the key into the ignition(Do NOT Turn) Pull key out.

3. Perform these steps within 40 seconds.
A. Close then open the drivers door.
B. Close then open the drivers door.
C. Insert the key into the ignition(Do NOT Turn) Pull key out.

4. Perform these steps within 40 seconds.
A. Close then open the drivers door.
B. Close then open the drivers door.
C. Insert the key into ignition and leave it in ignition.
D. Close the drivers door.
E. Turn the ignition to ON (Do NOT Start) then back to OFF.
F. Remove the key from the ignition.

5. Within 3 seconds, the power door locks should lock then unlock automatically
indicating successful entry into programming mode.
Return to step 1 if the locks do not cycle at this point.

6. Perform these steps within 40 seconds.
A. Press the lock and unlock buttons on the remtoe simutaneously for 1.5 seconds.
B. Immediately after letting go of the lock and unlock buttons,
Press the lock button by itself and hold for 2 seconds. Within 3 seconds, the door
locks should lock and then unlock once indicating successful programming. If
the door locks cycle twice, repeat steps A and B in step 6 as the remote was
not accepted.
C. Repeat steps A and B in step 6 for each new remote.

7. Open drivers door.

Best way to do it is to, either:

A) Subscribe to the thread in question.
b) Email that link/thread to your self, and create a "4RUNNER" folder in your desktop so you can refer back to it when you need it..

Did you just install the remote start? Do you have an immobilizer bypass?

The easiest thing to do is to get a key programmed with your cars code and tape it out of sight near the steering colunm. The immobilizer will read the code and release the starting ability.

If you don't do that, you have to either remove the immobilizer or buy some product that defeats it.

Before buyring my 04 runner i saw a couple others and they had all the same remote starter ... so i believed it was factory installed but I ask a toyota dealer and they tell it must be installed by the garage cause toyota don't install them at the factory ?!? still not sure of this answer because all 3 runner that i visited they all had the same remote ...

also th question that I got is ... the remote starter must have work before I got the truck ... HEHE the truck has 10 years now ... i canno't believe that it has never worked ...

No I bought the car an it was on it already but im pretty sure it was installed at the dealer in 2004 because coûple other runner i visited before buying this one had the exact same remote ...

all that is good info to reprogram another key to the truck, but he has a immobilizer bypass issue. it need to be coded up to the truck.

-take out the two 10mm bolts holding in the under dash
-look for a bypass module, usually they will have making like idatalink, ads, fortin, xpresskit, ifar, peripherial, omega, dei. with part numbers like ads-tb, dball, 555u, pktb ect.

look under there and report back with what you got. if it was done a long time ago it may have a extra key in a black box. the easiest way to tell with this type of immobilizer bypass is, there will be a wire ring around the igition tumbler.

take the under dash off and take pictures or a video of what you see, and i will tell you how to fix it from 800 miles away!!

btw- i did 3 remote starts today. one install of Rigid Industries Dually D2's on a 2008 ford f350 for reverse/work lights

ok rain stoped for a bit and I went under the dash ! Found 2 boxes one with many bigger rectangular connector with many wire and just on the side of it was a little black box with one loose connector (very small 2 wire white connector) i did un tie-rap the box from where it was and pushed back the connector . Closed all door, locked up the car and push the remote start button ... 3 turn on the starter and WRRRAMMM !! mortor start like if nothing heppened !! Im very happy that i was the only problem ! Thanks a lot for the information guys ! problem solved in les than 15 min ... here is the lil black box with a key inside (this installation canno't be a factory one lol I just don't think they use tie-rap to hold those box to a piece of steel hehe

see, it was key in a box solution. thats been in there for ages. modern ones like this. do not need a key in the box solution. if you have multiple key already then no need to swap out to this one. plus i think its easy to program extra keys to this car without it being too expensive.

Dang. That's an old bypass!

The Idatalink stuff is nice... But you have to also purchase the we link updater in order to program bypass. The "lose a key" bypass that you have will work fine...

First, make sure there are two plugs in the bypass. One is wiring harness, the other is a loop to wrap around immobilizer.

If they are both plugged in, pull the key out of in and hold the head of the key up to the cylinder and try to remits start. If it starts, you have one of two issues... If it doesn't, pm me.

First, check wiring connections. One wire will be constant 12v, typically red. Another will be ground, typically black. Finally, a third, typicallyblue or green, will show ground when you activate the remote start by pressing the button. You might have key sense... Which will show ground when key is inserted into ignition.... This does not need to be hooked up. If all wiring checks out, move on.

Pull off column cover, check ring that is wrapped around cylinder... These are very touchy... Have to be placed just right on the 4runner immobilizer to work.
