Removable Tire Carrier for 3rd gens

Here's the link to the first thread I started if you care to see how long it took me to finally get this done, LOL. here I've got pretty much everything figured out for making these now if anyone needs one. Remove 2 bolts and it's out. Fully adjustable for stock to larger tires. No holes to be drilled...attaches to cargo D rings.

Pics are taken with a 285/70r17 but there is probably enough room for a 36 but definitely a 315/75r16.

It is not made to hold a Hi-Lift. I was just taking a look to see if I wanted to try to get it to fit. I have a 60" but a 48" might work.

Thanks Gerdo. It looks simple but I had a few set backs that took up some time. Atleast I learned a few things and have a good tucked up, out of the way, spare tire carrier now.

It's not universal in that way if you mean could you swap from side to side freely. It can be made to fit either side with a simple change in the area circled in red though.

OR

I could make it like a "T" on the encircled part so you can swap from side to side. The only inconvience you would have is rolling the tire around the small extension.

I personally have been trying to move gear out of the 4runner, but you can't beat a compact way to hold stuff inside where it is nice and safe from would be thieves. I would be tempted to bracket off of it to have a way to hold a tool box/bag on top of the wheel well behind the tire. Not sure how much more weight those two 6mm bolts will hold though.

With the tire sitting on the floor like that, there isn't much force applied to the bolts as is. It would almost stand on its own without being bolted down since the tire acts like another leg.

What did you have in mind? If the wheel hump could help support the weight it should work

Ideally would be like a flat plate that sits on top with a tool box that could slide on and off for easy access (with a latch of some kind). It would tuck it back out of the way but allow super quick access. I may have to figure out a way to do something like that in mine. I don't plan to move the tire inside, but I hate having the tool box ratchet strapped down, its too long of a process when I need something out of it.

I like yours but with a cargobox I couldnt do that, but looks great, good enough Im going to think about redoing my cargobox to have something like that :hatsoff:

Functional, ease of use, mulitple applications and simply brillant. Nice job..... looks like you're on to something here. Although I have not looked if this product is not already available, I would look into protecting your design.

A thought that crossed my mind, perhaps attaching to the existing frame a hinged platform 6-10", just enough when folded down would support the tire footprint off the carpet. I see two benefits, it would protect the carpeted area the tire sits on as well as added stability to the upright structure tieing it further into the tire mass.

I don't know how to protect the design, honestly. Didn't even know if it would be worth doing.

That carpet protector could easily be added for sure. I tried to keep as much weight off as possible but that idea never crossed my mind. Good idea, some people have nice carpet unlike myself. :biggrin2:

My goal was to make something simple, adjustable, lightweight, and as small as possible to help with shipping costs. Without the wheel mount bracket attached the frame only weighs 15lbs. That bracket probably weighs less than 10lbs.

Whenever anybody wants one. I have enough material to make 2 quickly. I can also offer it $30 cheaper if you know someone that can weld. Also, would probably make shipping cheaper.

$160 + shipping for welded in bare metal
$130 + shipping for unwelded but marked for assembly

I rattle canned mine but I can have it powdercoated for an additional amount....ball park of $30-$40. I haven't been given a formal quote. I got that from conversation so I can't say for 100% sure but I will find out if interested.

As far as design protection, you really can't. You could patent something but someone else can make a small change and sell "their design". At that point you could try to sue them, but it will cost you time and money. Then general idea is just to design and sell, if someone rips off your idea, you will be so focused on the next part that hopefully it won't matter.

I know what you mean about projects started long ago, I still haven't finished my bumper. When I went to look at my initial tire carrier ideas I realized it had already been 7 years since I started. At this rate I'll get it finished in another 3 years lol.

edit: I was looking at the pics some more and started to wonder about the weight of the tire while going over large bumps. Do you think it would be a good idea to shim up under the tire to keep the weight from prying up/ripping the stock bolts in the floor. I think those bolts are only in sheet metal right? I was envisioning some bigger bumps with over 2 Gs of force that would put over 180 lbs of down force multiplied by whatever leverage there is. Maybe extending the stabilizer bar that goes from the passenger to the driver side could be another level of assurance too?

Well the tire sits on the floor since its adjustable and so far while I'm testing it out, it doesn't move at all going over bumps. I've only had it attached for a few days so I need to try it out a little more thoroughly
