removal of the rear differential carrier

I sure hope that someone on here can help me.......I am removing the rear differential from the housing. There is a round silver thing attached to the top of the differential case, a bolt goes down and a bracket holds it into the case. I have removed all the nuts and bolts holding the differential but that round silver thing won't come loose and I don't want to break it. Without removing it *I won't be able to remove the differential to replace the pinion bearings and seal and my Haynes book is worthless. They say the repair of the differential is beyond the scope of the home mech and to buy a new one.

This is what I was asking about, I still don't know what it is, it is at the top of the case with a vacuum line going to it and the black part sits just above the ring gear but not touching.

I sprayed with WD40 and took a flat screw driver between it and ring gear, a little prying and twisting at the same time and it came loose. Sure would like to know what it is and what it does,,,,and why.....

I'am not sure, the line goes over to the passenger side and disappears by the fuel tank. It feels like a hollow rubber line. once it disappears it could go anywhere.

OK, it to the ABS and isn't a vacuum line there are wires inside. I am thinking that my problem may have been a wheel bearing passenger side and even if it isn't I am going to replace the axle bearings also, got it apart mights as well.

Pretty sure its a wheel speed sensor. The rear usual will go into the diff like that and reads the teeth on the gears, instead of being in the hubs and reading the reluctor ring.

Autoplicity, What function does it serve. Not sure I understand.

Its your ABS(anti lock brake) Sensor. I should have said that way instead of wheel speed sensor. It measures the rotational speed of the diff gear and uses that to calculate the speed of the vehicle as well as the speed of the rear wheels. In connection with the front 2 wheel sensors it determines while braking if tires are locking up and helps to keep the from doing that.

Thanks, I think I understand it. Sure is a lot of things on here that I don't understand. It took me months to figure out the vacuum lines. Thanks again...

OK, last question. Anybody know the torque setting for the bolts on the ring gear bearings. Again Haynes won't tell, do think they know.....

75 ft pounds per what Zuk says on gearinstalls.com

awesome advice until it breaks a bolt:rolleyes:
use a manual torque wrench for gear set up

I learned a long time ago to never assemble something with a impact. Everything is set with a torque wrench. In my misspent youth I raced motorcycles, all the screws were replaced with allen head and all case screws set with a torque wrench, never had an oil leak.

Got the axl out and the bearing was trash, that was the source of all the noise and popping. They are a caged bearing and the cage was busted in about 3 places and the bearings were running loose. I thank all for the info, there is a lot of good info on this site and thanks for helping an old man and his first Toyota.

Ok, its almost back together, just a few minor things to hook up. Third member is bolted down axles are in and bolted. I am going to pull the brake drum on the passenger side, once I got it on the drum was hard to turn, may have messed with the adjustment by accident.

Newbie question. Inside the rear axles there is a tin( don't know what to call it ) thing that the axle goes through and its attached to the inside of the axle housing. Anybody know what it's there for and what does it do......
