Remove and reinstall XREAS front shocks

Tore apart my complete front suspension to install ToyTec spacers. Only then i realized that XREAS line gives no slack and I couldn’t remove the coilover to knock out the 3 studs and install spacers.

Doing this on the floor, can i unbolt just the front shock with XREAS, then successfully reinstall it? If it is possible, where should i disconnect it? Since I'm doing this in the floor, is it ok that that the diagonal of the shock I am working on, suspension is compressed? I ask because i know XREAS shocks are connected diagonally.

there is disconnection points at the frame rails, but truck needs to be up, otherwise you loose fluid, i would ditch the x-reas shocks all together and just reuse the springs, as long your springs are not sagged, its a cheaper alternative to use aftermarket springs and shocks when doing suspension, doing the spacers with a tired suspension parts is not worth integrating.

If it is possible, where should i disconnect it? Since I'm doing this in the floor, is it ok that that the diagonal of the shock I am working on, suspension is compressed? I ask because i know XREAS shocks are connected diagonally.

Here are the details on Xreas from the 03 FSM. Gives the details on teh disconnection points. As mentioned earlier you'll need all 4 wheels off the ground to close the system at the disconnect points and break the connection.

I'll second the remove the system and replace with aftermarket if you can afford to do so.

If you keep the Xreas and need the center sections I have a pair in the shed pulled in working condition when I removed mine at ~80k miles.

I re-read the FSM procedure, but i still dont see where to disconnect. Also, it only mentions that the opposite shock needs to be fully extended, not all 4.

At this point, i have 2 questions:
1. where is the right place to disconnect the front shock XREAS if i plan to reinstall it?

2. Say i am working on front passenger side, do both front passenger (one I'm working on) and the rear driver (diagonal opposite) have to be fully extended OR just the rear driver?

each shock has the one way check valve disconnect point about 10-12" down the line from where it banjo bolts to the shock itself. they are a 2-3" long union of 2 nuts, you hold one end & turn the other & they split apart & the one way check valve stops fluid from coming out.

this is an x-system so technically the opposite corner should be what needs to be off the ground along with the side your working on. however, it would be easier to just lift the whole truck instead of messing with lifting 2 opposite corners.

i will 2nd the suggestion of replacing the xreas entirely, if you have anywhere near 80k miles chances are its shot or not working as good as it should. i just replaced my xreas in my 08 2 weeks ago & even though the xreas had no leaks & was "working", it is night & day difference with new shocks & springs & did not cost that much.

See the “X-REAS Delete...” thread linked in my sig for info & pics. Also happy to answer any questions. Hate to tell you but the fronts are a real PITA. You’ll also need a 22mm wrench.

Honestly, I had such a tough time just disconnecting the damn things to remove them that I can’t imagine reinstalling them, but I’m sure it can be done with enough determination.

All things considered, I also recommend just replacing the X-REAS if you can do it now. The day isn’t that far off anyway so why do it twice?
