I'm pretty new to all this, but I have a 1990 runner (original owner) which is scratched up to beat all. I did some off roading in my younger days... Anyway, I cant afford a complete new paint job so I was wondering, can I do a decent job on most scratches with compound rub or does a good detail man take care of the scratches. By the way, none of the scratches are to the metal. Thanks

I wouldn't mess with a compound unless you know what you are doing. A good reputable detailer will go over your vehicle with you and discuss scratches and problem areas and will polish out any defects that can be corrected.
