Remove Tow Hitch?

Really not interested in towing anything so I'm considering removing the factory tow hitch and snipping the wires as far into the harness as possible.

Any interest around here for a used tow hitch or is this a thow-away item once removed?

alot of the ime the wires are just run into each tailight (like a plug and play) if you follow them back you should be able to just unplug it unless its hard wired

The stock rear bumper on the 4runner is rather flimsy. Even if you don't tow anything, it does make a good solid frame mounted bumper. It will offer some protection. Plus, you live in the snow belt- you never know when you might have to pull some one out of ditch and your fasteners might be so rusted the removal might be difficult.

Just my opinion though.

Yep I was going to say the same thing as SingToe.

I keep mine on strictly for protection now. Since I don't have a rig on 35"+ tires anymore, I still try to do the same trails when I go out. I've ended up beating the crap out of the tow hitch but its saved my nice flimsy Toyota bumper!

Also if you get rear ended, it might help, but who knows.

Lastly, if you take it off, you'll notice your spare hanging down a lot more.

I've got one and it's well made, useful as a step, but hasn't been collision tested (on my car) yet. I saw good things though while researching it before I bought it. In fact, I've got an extra one (brand new) in black if you're interested.

I'm in the same situation as you Rlly whereby I don't tow anything, so I took mine off for about a month (it gives you a nice 1/2" of lift in the back when you do this ), but after awhile of driving around, the way people drive nowadays, right up on your ass all the time, I decided to put it back on just as armor.

I'm seriously thinking about fabricating something out of 3" angle iron that I can weld onto a hitch insert that will offer me some solid protection across the entire rear of the truck that I can slide on and off if necessary, but that will maybe minimize damage when one of these idiots eventually inadvertently rear-end me, again.

Haha, Rlly im feeling your pain. Was thinking of maybe removing it too... less weight = better fuel mileage. But prob keep it on as rear-end armour.:boxer:
