Removed Roof Rack from TE

Each side of the rack has 4 bolts, with star shape tool as shown. You'll need a T40 size star tool, found it by the hex wrenches at the store. If you can find one with a long lever arm, you'll need it. The rear two bolts on each side were wicked tight.

Cross members unscrew by hand on the left side. Once the right side is removed, use star tool (size T25) to unscrew cross members from the right side (for low-profile storage).

Looks like the bolts are size 8. I installed ~.25" long zinc-coated bolts in place after removing the rack, just to keep debris out. I couldn't find black ones at the store. They don't match the truck, but the holes are recessed so you cannot see the bolts unless on top of the truck. You will need replacement bolts because the originals are too long and will stick up awkwardly.

I think it looks better without the rack.

Did you wrap the threads or are you going to keep an eye on them for signs of rust?

I'm glad to see it can be done, but I'm still hopeful that one of the aftermarket companies will make a stronger rail&rack system... like Gobi or ARB.

Not in the near future. I'd like to take it to at least 200k miles. Either way, I'd prefer my truck to look good in the long run. However, not to the detriment of having fun with it.

I'll put a rack on when there is one worth putting on, no offense. Or if I need to throw a kayak up there. :biggrin2:

And I washed it! Now that I have that out of my system, I'll take it easy on her for a while imp:

Here is a pic from the parts manual.They make parts that seal those up as 4cyl models don't have the roof racks standard. #3 means 4 cyl only and are 75596 and 75596D.You will have to get the rest of the 10 digit part number, from your parts dept. to order them.

Definitely need to seal those up good as they go straight thru to brackets on the inside above your headliner.

I ordered the filler parts, $12 each.

Also got this schematic from the dealer for the roof rack. Turns out the bars are $190 a piece, end covers are ~$110 a piece. Plus all that other crap. I'm sure the crossbars aren't cheap either. He didn't give me prices for everything, but you would have to buy the rack in each part, not as an assembly. He thought it would be ~$1000-1500 total.



Anyone want to buy mine?:tongue: The rack has never been loaded/used.

Update:

I got the roof drip covers from toyota, took a day for it to be shipped to the local dealer. ~$12.50 each. Part # 75596-0E040 or 75596-35030, both appear on the package. I am not sure if this is correct or if the parts guy was just lazy, but they all fit OK.

I RTV'ed all around the plastic cylinder that protrudes and all underneath the bracket-looking thing. I also RTV'ed all around the bolt, which I used to plug the holes (8mm x 15 I think, shortest length available at home depot/Lowe's). Seems more robust than an o-ring solution, which I tried for a few days. It's hard to get an o-ring/bolt combination the correct size, since it seems there is not much travel in those bolt holes.

Anyhow, the cover snaps to the bracket. It is not seamless with the roof, so plugging/sealing the bolt holes is a must regardless of cover or not. Cover does make it look good and should keep out larger debris.

Hopefully should keep the :toilet: out while I wait for a good aftermarket rack to come out.

The total price for an SR5/Limited roof rack is $1130.42, without tax I guess. You have to buy it in parts. And that is not including crossbars, I couldn't find those parts.

The TE rack is about $6 more.
