I just removed my stock running boards when I got home from work. I hated them on the truck. IMO they were ugly. They also got in my way when entering or exiting the truck. I never used them and they only got my pants dirty. I think the truck looks much better now. Now I have to see if somebody with a SR5 will trade me roof racks.

If you can please. I always rub my pant leg against them when getting out. Wondering what the truck looks like without them. I was under the truck this past Sunday lubing the driveshafts and the boards are held on with three brackets each. Plus wiring for the lights on the Limited versions.

I cannot wait to see the picture of the truck without the running boards. I do not like them either. I really like the silver tubes that they shipped the early 4th gens with. My grandparents have then on a RAV4 and they look very sporty. Most importantly, they do not get in the way of entering and exiting the vehicle! :nono:
What's involved removing them?
Hi guys, I agree......exactly what's involved in removing them. The only problem I see is that they also serve as the door body molding-like protection, and once removed there is no protection against some idiots slamming their doors into the 4runner. If you remove the running boards, are you adding door protective body molding?

Sliders/Rock Rails might work
To prevent some pinhead from damaging your ride. If someone is lame enough to bash their door into your sliders they'll be the ones to come way with the damage.
Sadly nobody has quite worked out how to install the rails around the XREAS components on my Sport...
Might try removing my boards when I get time. Though so far I have avoided damaging them on my offroad excusions.

i removed them the first day and put them back on.
The new look was questionable.
The door ding factor made me put them back on.
I was all for no dirty pants and dropping 30lbs, but door dings would drive me crazy.
I did remove my roof racks tho. like it still. easy to find my car in a parking lot...

I agree...the door dings would also drive me nuts! I was thinking of asking the body shop at the Toyota dealership if they can put the Sequoia door molding on my runner. Unfortunately the 04 has that indented part below the 4runner wording on the door so I don't know if they can do it. That way I can remove the boards. I wonder if anyone out there has done this???

As far as door dings go, just dont park next to idiots (minivans, cars crappily parked, crappy cars, etc.) or just dont park next to anyone.
The steps to removing them:
1. crawl under car with 12mm socket.
2. remove 6 bolts
3. put bolts back in holes.
4. store / sell side steps
Difficulty rating (1 = easiest, 10 = hardest): 0

An additional 30 second walk not only keeps the door dings away - but the truck is much safer from theft, burgulary, etc. The bad guys want a car in amongst other cars. If you park next to a minivan, Excresion, etc., you're begging for trouble.
If you go to the above trouble, & some AH still door dings you,
they will be saying: [to AAA] "I've never had a car get four flats at once!!"

I just use advice a customer of mine gave me many years ago -- when you're out, don't park where it's easy to get where you're going (like into the building). Instead, park where it's easy to leave the parking lot.EXTEX said:

If anyone is looking to sell their silver stock running boards, let me know. The silver would look much better on my SE to match the roof rack and other silver trim IMO. I couldn't care less about the lighted feature of the Limited, but I'll take what I can get.
I suppose the other option would be painting the stock black ones, though I don't know how well that would hold up over time on a part that gets stepped on a lot. I need to use my running boards a lot for loading and unloading bikes from my roof rack...
