So I've managed to drop the pan and the dipstick piece is floating between the 90 degree kink and the upper twisted part (just the pan section). I can't figure a way to get this thing out. I've tried to run a coat hanger and it has only managed to push the dipstick up enough to see about 1 to 2 inches of it. How does everyone get the darn thing out after its broken?!?!

Could you reach it with a pair of surgical forceps or hemostat?

I managed to get it out last night after prodding it for a few hours. I'll make a note what I did in case anyone is searching this down the road.
I unbent a coat hanger, made a small ball out of paper and jammed it through the tube from the pan side. I had to poked around for quite some time until the dipstick would push far enough that I could take some long skinny needle nose pliers and pull it out.
I'm not sure of the cost of a new pan but I'd recommend buying a pan from a junkyard or etc. There might be a possibility of swapping to a (99?) 2000 transmission pan and tube for easier removal and insertion later on?

I've never actually done this but a magnet tool retriever or some one to help you when you push from underneath they can use needle nose etc to pull the broken stick out. hopefully someone who's been in this situation can chime in.
