removing stripe

I posted this thread on the detailing section of the forum, but got no takers, so I'll try here.
Im interested in removing the decal stripe on my 90 4runner. It looks terrible. I asked my local body shop guy, and he said try 3M woodgrain and decal remover and be prepared to spend an entire weekend scrubbing. Has anyone done this, or used this stuff? Thanks

Hey there, had an '89 4Runner once that I used "goo be-gone" on. you can get it at Wal Mart. or any orther Orange type glue/goo/sticky stuff removal liquid. But be prepaired for possibly having a faint stripe on the side of your vehicle as your paint will have faded. You may get away with a good polishing/rubbing compound to remove the faint stripe. Yes I agree, but be prepared for the shadow of the decal still being there it will be noticably.

thanks for the replies guys. how 'bout this... I was thinking of removing the decal, then running a pinstripe around the outline of the shadow where the decal was(top and bottom). The bodyshop guy said that would be OK since the pinstripe will "distract" the eye and brain so that the shadow wont be as pronouced. Wadda ya think?
 
i removed the stripe on my blue 95 this spring...after a good buffing of the car and a nice coat of wax its not noticeable at all
 
decal removal

My '94 Runner's decal is so ugly, so when i finally decided to take it off i took a good look at it, and I saw that it was scraped around the edges! That made me very suspicious, so I went and got a carfax and found out that my rig was in a wreck back in 1996, (looks like it probably rolled) so that means that it was probably repainted and someone had to "dig" the decal out from under the new paint. But they did such a crappy job on it! They should of just removed it in the first place.

I just bought a 2000 4runner with a gaudy pinstripe decal around the contour.

I had an even bigger, gaudier one on my old jeep that I was able to get off fairly easily.
(On a warm day, as the heat loosens up the adhesive.... and with 'goo gone' the orange stuff, as mentioned above.) It took me quite few sessions... and every once in a while I would find a spot where the dirt had clung to leftover adhesive that went unnoticed. For years. Every once in a while I would notice a spot of adhesive I thought looked clean upon the last wash.

Honestly, heat is your best friend in loosening the adhesive to be able to easily pull off the sticker in the biggest piece possible....
The warmer and stickier you get it, the better chance you have at pulling the decal of in (close to) one piece. After the actual sticker is off, and it's just a bunch of glue, googone was the best thing I could find to get rid of the glue without ruining the paint.... but maybe it takes more elbow grease than I was willing to give.... because the glue kept showing itself... even after I thought it was gone... seems like getting that glue off might be the hardest part.


My jeep was a long process in getting the sticker off, because I'm lazy and didn't care how it looked for a couple weeks while I chipped away at it.... jeep also had quite a few surface scratches on it already when I bought it.... so I wasn't as concerned about accidentally leaving another surface scratch.

but my new 2000 4runner doesn't have a scratch on it..... so I'm hoping to find an even better product and hopefully an even gentler technique to getting rid of the adhesive safely on my own!

Looking forward to following this thread and maybe finding an even better solution!

And please forgive anyone and everyone who ever thought tacky decals were a good idea. I'm sure they meant well!

I have had good luck using a rubber "eraser wheel" for removing decals and side molding from my wife's ride. I know that the older decal/stripes are going to be harder to remove though.
 
Acetone and a good set of fingernails. It'll come off. I have a new silver stripe kit I'll sale you too. I decided to repaint instead of replacing the stripe
 
The item [MENTION=139172]Billythekid[/MENTION] mentioned and linked. Thats what i used and it works the very best and easiest!! Ive used the rubber wheel. Also removes old 3m double sided tape. I highly would suggest it. Takes decals off easily. Wear safety glasses and use a drill.

so i guess this was the thread that I saw about the adhesive remover wheel
i ordered a $10 version off ebay, 2-3 hours is what it took me to remove stripes from both sides
my corded drill was tool slow, so used my 18v drill- i had several battery changes and a 6 bank charger
watch a few videos, don't stay in one spot too long,

Pretty happy with the outcome for $10 and an afternoon

A trick I know a bunch of people have used and works is fuel line antifreeze. wont ruin the paint either. Goo gone spray gel left on for 24hours will work well too. It needs to really soak into the decal than use a plastic razor blade after. you will need a degreaser after to get the spray off.
