Removing the Cat converter, what does it get me?

Hi, my cat converter recently started rattling, it is falling apart on the inside.
The shops here are crazy on price to replace it.

I have no emissions test in rural NM so my question is, replacing the cat with a straight pipe:
What will it get me? less restrictive flow? better MPG? louder?

You'll get a bit more power (not really noticeable), a bit better MPG, a bit louder exhaust noise, really bad smell and eye tearing fumes & much more poisonous fumes. You can always have the muffler shop make a pipe with flanges so that you can install a catalytic if you don't like it or just remove the catalytic and drill out the material as best as you can with an extra long large diameter (1in) wood drill bit

Maybe a little louder, not really going to affect MPG, added air pollution.

Ok, cat is out and replaced with a straight pipe. It is a slight bit louder under acceleration but not noticeable at speed.
I do not really notice any performance changes and I do not notice any smell that a few have mentioned. I will update on MPG after I run thru a tank or two

My 96 four runner had a check engine light on, and when I would give it gas to pass someone or just speed up it would bog or rpms would go up but it was slow to speed up. So I was told by a tech at a Toyota dealer that my cat might be cloged, So I cut the cat off it seems to be running better it does have a lot better pick up,my question is should I change the o2 sensores that are down by the cat

Good post, I had m cat. removed today as well. I have an 1988 SR5 V6 auto.. I have a set of Downey headers, Downey Cold Air Intake, going to get an updated muffler!! Soon... My cat. was totally stopped up.. I can tell a major difference. Like Night and Day.. It will not smell so do worry to much about that..
