Removing the need for a chipped key.

Is there a way to remove the need for a chipped key?
Don't really care about the factory security system and don't want to have to pay the high price for chipped keys.

I need to replace the body ecu anyways and noticed there is different one for models with the factory security system and ones without. Is the factory sec system part of the body ecu? If so, if I get the one for non factory security systems, will it stop my need for chipped keys?

It is a 1999 Limited if it matters.

It is possible. I don't know the specifics, but the previous owner of mine had an alarm system installed that bypassed the transponder key. The dealer I got a spare from confirmed that mine should have had a transponder, but the copy they made me was just a plain metal key.

I figured it was possible...I am of the belief that everything is possible with enough money and knowledge.

The easy way is to take the chip out of your chipped key and tape it up somewhere under the dashboard. Voilá (not "walla", for Pete's sake), instant and zero cost dechipification. Make as many metal keys as you want at the hardware store.

Already thought about that but my key is completely sealed so I don't know if I could pull it out without damaging the chip.

How about getting another key cut without the chip and putting the one with the chip under the dash.:tape:

I just confirmed with my truck that this will work. As long as the transponder key is close enough to the ignition switch a plain metal key WILL star and run the truck. So if the trim was pulled off and transponder key was taped next to the ignition all should be good eliminating the need for expensive keys and the fear of losing the only one you may have.

I suppose I could do that but if there is a way to disconnect something simple...I would like to do that.
