The only thing I read that made an eyebrow go up was his take on rebuilt starters. If you go to a reputable parts joint, they aren't going to risk that reputation on spray painted phonies. Not saying that there aren't scams out there but it wouldn't be a common problem if you stay in the main current.

If you're about to replace your starter on a 90 or so 4runner prepare for battle. The access plate is behind the front right tire and it all looks so innocent...
I swore I'd sell the car before putting another starter in so let me tell you what I learned. The starter fits in there with about 2 centimeters to spare because the brake lines are in the way. The wires to my starter weren't long enough to attach and then install the starter. I had to attach them when the whole thing was already in there but not bolted up yet. It was a total be-auch. And I'm not a wimp when it comes to wrenching.
My mechanic friend told me he takes off the brake lines so it's much easier.
Just my honest opinion from my personal experience.
Maybe you should talk to a local mechanic before replacing yours. It could be an educational experience.

It's an '87. It looks like removing the tire and wheel well panel are going to be my strategy.
I just can't bear the thought of paying my garage any more money this year. I have family cars that are beyond the scope of any reasonable shade tree work. This 4Runner and my Suburban are the only tool-time satisfaction I can get.
I really think that with enough anecdotal advice like I've been finding, I'll be able to adapt and overcome.

It took me an entire day to install my new starter but I would do things differently this time. Taking off the brake lines may lead to another pain in the Axx but you would have enough room to get the starter in there.
Call the local toyota guys and ask them what they would advise. I'm not saying to pay to have it repaired. But get some info before you end up with that thing wedged inside there and pondering taking a bus to South America to get away from it all.
