Renovating my garage!

So I am putting both of my truck builds on hold at the moment and am going to renovate my garage and make it more "shop" like. Basically will be trashing everything I dont need and rearranging everything. Didnt really know where to put this so itll go in off-topic. Plans right now are to finish the garage, IE put up some drywall, putty it and paint it white. Also the floors will be epoxied, I know a lot of people dislike it, but neither of my trucks fit in the garage now and it'll basically just be for working on stuff. Also want to add some additional lighting. So first item on the list is to clean out the garage and begin laying drywall.

Updates to come! Progress is going to be slow because of school, but I will be doing all of the work myself on this one.

I'd really like to epoxy my garage floors too but what would I do with all the stuff while I power washed the floor? I used a Rustoleum epoxy kit on a small 11x16 shed a couple of years ago (after a flood/hurricane) and it turned out great. This is it. I messed up a bit on the flakes. It stays pretty clean looking.

Good to hear about the rustoleum stuff turning out good. I had planned on using it to do the floor int he garage. I have a ton of stuff in there right now, I plan on moving most of it to the backyard patio under the canopy while I clean and wash the floor for the epoxy. Most of my big expensive tools are at my buddy's house now since we are doing the Tacoma SAS there. Im loaning out my engine crane and tranny jack. Figured now is probably the best time to try to get the garage setup the way I want it. As you can see in the first pic, everything is extremely cluttered. Its a 2.5 car garage but doesnt look like it in the pic.

When I paneled my garage years ago, I marked the centerline of the studs at the top of each panel. That way when I went to hang things later, I'd hang a plumb bob and know exactly the center of the stud I was mounting to. FWIW.

I was thinking I could have been more helpful about the Rustoleum application. I used a one car garage kit for a 11x16 shed and barely had enough coverage at the end. You pour it out in a puddle and spread it with a squeegee that screws on a broom stick. I divided the chip bag into four smaller bags to give each section the same amount. I threw the chips in the air and let them fall and that resulted in heavy in some areas and too light in the others. I'd get a cheese shaker from the dollar store next time. For a two car garage I would definitely get enough for a three car. It's been down since Hurricane Irene so three years? and it's still shiny. It sees a lawnmower and bikes, no cars.

Good stuff, ill keep your advice in mind. I dont really plan on parking any vehicles in there except for the occasional tear down which itll be sitting on jackstands placed ontop of mats. I also plan on buying the professional version of the epoxy from rustoleum. Not positive on the differences, but most of the guys fromt he garage forum seem to think the pro version lasts longer and better.

Unfortunately it really isn't. I am pretty limited on space constraints, and since the garage is detached, there is zero plumbing going to it. I played around with the idea of adding a sink but i usually just go outside and use the hose.

Make sure you add grit if you want to epoxy your floor.

When I rebuilt my garage, I used plywood to sheet the walls, so I can hang stuff...everywhere, not just where there's studs (for light stuff anyways). I also added an exhaust fan, which works great for getting rid of fumes, it's cold here half the year so I can't just have the doors open all the time.

No down here in NC insulation in the walls isnt really a necessity. I actually have access to the stuff from work since I work for an insulation company at the moment. The winter here rarely gets cold enough to keep me out of the garage, it actually makes welding more enjoyable for me haha. As for hanging plywood, I really thought about going that route, actually hanging the pegboard type stuff you find at the hardware stores for the hangers instead. I talked to my mom about it since I am currently living at home and this is technically my parents garage. My mom preferred I finish the garage so that after I moved out in a couple of years (still in college) the garage would look nice and she could park her car in there. She's footing the bill on materials and I will be doing the labor.

We made a drunken urinal in the shop. Since we drink in there allot and opening the garage door when its so cold lets the little heat out, we zip tied a funnel to the garage door track and ran a hose outside. Pretty disgusting but when your drunk it works great. Plus it drains right out to the dirt where we piss anyways.

My best friend (single guy) has a urinal in his house and when I first met him it was a bit weird to me. BUT after all these years of hanging out with a guy (usually more than one when his buddies come over).
It's awesome not ever having to worry about the seat being left up or piss being on the seat.
So, having spent the last several years being friends with a guy with a urinal. I promise you ladies, urinals are just as much a girls friend as they are a guys friend! LOL

So I found out some interesting stuff about my garage today. I went to home depot to buy sheetrock to hang. Came back home and started hanging the sheetrock. So 1st thing I found out, the studs are not square and EVERY stud is angled. After a little bit of screwing around I decided to just hang the rock up slightly at an angle so i can still hit the studs with the screws and still keep the walls relatively straight. Looking at just the walls, its not noticeable but it is pretty apparent when you look at where the sheetrock meets the ceiling. Anyways the second thing I found out today was that after hanging 2 sheets of rock, the 3rd sheet completely covered the last stud that you mount it to. Which means theres no beginning stud for the 4th piece and I couldnt add another stud because of the electrical lines running through the wall there. I measured off the backwall and found whoever framed the garage put the one stud about an inch over too far which messed up the corresponding studs. Ended up having to shave off an inch on one of the boards to make it work. In the end I got the left wall hung. Now to start on the right side and then move to the back wall...:frusty:

All in all I am quite happy with myself, a it frustrated with the studs being off, but what can you do? I dont plan on drywalling the ceiling at this point and just plan to smooth out the wall as best as I can and then paint the sum*****.

Nobody's going to see your new stud work. Screw sections of stud onto the existing stud. You can work around the electrical wire. It's a good way to use up scrap 2x4 and it will give you something to screw the drywall to. It's called blocking and it's a legitimate method.

Use blue painters tape to mark where you DON'T want to put a screw, like through the wires.

Made some more head way yesterday. Finished cleaning out the rear portion of the garage. Then made a run to home depot to pick up supplies for wiring in more outlets and a 240 aswell. I got the new 120 outlets wired in (6 in total) and a junction box. The 240 I will be running from the fuse panel next weekend. I also began drywalling the rear portion of the garage and started mudding the walls.
