Repair Reimbursement - Warranty

Long story short:

Left my car running while talking to a friend the other night, without the engine running. Came out the next morning and it was dead. Jumped it, and all was fine. Went to remote start it, and no luck.

Took it into Toyota today, to have them reset the remote start. 110% under warranty, as it is a factory installed option. I bought the Runner with 30k miles on it, and it was a Certified Pre Owned. So, there should be no question here.

Went to pick it up, and they had a bill of $150 for it.. I laughed and said it was under warranty and all that. They said they couldn't find my service contract/100k mile bumper to bumper warranty, in their system. I bought the Runner from a different dealer, out of state.

So, I go back and forth with them.. they knock it down to $80 and tell me that I can file with Toyota corporate, and be reimbursed. At this point, I am running late for a meeting so I say F it, and pay the $80, with full intentions of getting my reimbursement. I had already caused a pretty big scene with the service guy and his boss, so I decided to just get it over with and get the Runner back.

I say all that, to ask this:

Has anyone had any work done that they thought should be under warranty, and been charged for it? Then were able to file for reimbursement, and get paid back? I already know I am going to be on hold with Toyota for 3 hours, lol. Just trying to see if there is any prior experience to dealing with them.

Thanks!

I don't see how you are going to blame Toyota for leaving your car running. YOU left the key on which killed the battery not Toyota therefore anything related to what YOU did is on YOUR dime That's like saying you hit a deer and want Toyota not your insurance to pay for the damages.

Did you show them your paperwork stating that it is under warranty? Or did you just take the salesperson's "word" that it was covered when you purchased it?

I have both warranty/extended warranty cards with warranty numbers and everything. They didn't have it in their system or whatever, so they couldn't help me out at the moment. Which.. is stupid, because they could have just said "Dont worry about it" once I showed them all the documentation for the warranty, which was conveniently located in my glove compartment.

The battery was 3 weeks old, and has 99% charge right now.

I wasn't mad at the fact that the battery needed to be jumped. Was mad at the fact that they were trying to charge me $150 for something that is under warranty. If the remote start goes out, it takes 5 minutes to go back in and get it all reset. Had the same thing happen with my Tundra in Dallas, no questions asked and I stood there while they did it.

The preface is to give a back story on why I was in the shop. It was what happened/the cost that provoked the thread. If something like remote start goes out on a $30k vehicle, and it is a simple fix for a customer with a FULL warranty for 100k miles, you fix it and give it back with no charge.

The remote start is covered for 3/36 it does not get covered under the extended warranty. If the battery is new or old if it goes dead because the ignition was left on technically speaking they don't have to cover it.

If I had a customer have that happen to them I would help you out for free but some dealerships don't care and will stick you with a bill.

I couldn't find it in the 3/36 but I didn't look that hard, as I was already pissed that they tried to charge me an hour+ of labor, for something that took 10 minutes. I saw them take it in and bring it back outside. I had a meeting so I got a courtesy car from them and went to that. Came back and they were like "Yea man, hour of labor.. $150 after taxes and stuff".. like cmon dude.. I saw yall pull it in and out.

They did wash and vacuum, though. "Free of charge"..

Forgot to mention that I had the tires rotated last week and reset the maintenance required light doing the odometer button process, but the screen came back up. They said they'd look at it and reset it with their computer.. got back in the Runner to leave and it was still on *face palm*

don't think reprogramming remote start is covered under warranty.
The system itself might be covered if it failed for any reason other then dead battery.

I wouldn't have mentioned the battery to them, but it legit had like 400 miles on it, and was less than a month old.. installed by Toyota of Dallas, before I bought it.

So, next time I get a new battery (assuming its before 100k miles), I am going to have to pay to have something reprogrammed, that should be in full working order/factory option?

If the warranty info wasn't in "their system" and you had all the numbers etc. they should have been able to look it up. Seems odd a dealer would have a local system that wasn't connected to the main system.

remote start requires dealership programming when the battery dies? really?

Cant tell if you're being sarcastic or not..

But, that is what I had read on here, so I took it in for them to get it set up. There wasn't anything I found, that would allow me to reprogram it myself.

If the remote start was like something that only worked with whatever battery it was programmed with, then I could understand.. but it isn't that way.

They're not a cohesive.

That was my question. But, like I said.. I was in a hurry so I will just get my reimbursement back, if I can get Toyota to realize the problem.

Probably not covered under 3yr/36k, but I'm not sure on that.

If you have an extended warranty it should show up in Service Lane when they pull your VIN. That is assuming the warranty is through Toyota and not through the dealership/their parent company.
