Repairing Hail Damage

My 4Runner is going in Monday to have the hail damage fixed. It had almost 7K in hail damage so most of the entire truck is going to be fixed and repainted. I am debating if I want to have the pings on the roof fixed. The insurance company paid to replace the roof skin, but if I were to have it fixed it'd be by PDR.

I know that it would devalue it if I sold it and I know that if it were hailed on it wouldn't be paid for.
It would save time and money if it weren't repaired. There's no indication of chipped paint.

Obviously because it's on top, I can't see any of the damages, so it's not something that would bother me. Just can't make up my mind if I should leave it or fix it.

It's obviously personal preference.. but since its lifted, and a trail warrior at times?.. If it was me in your shoes? I would leave it...


Besides, the damage is not bad enough to make a determination into spending money to fix it.. it only looks bad cosmetic wise.. not too deep..

ALSO* know that hail isnt like HALLEY's Comet, where it comes every 76 years.. Hail, like all types of weather, is unpredictable...

I would fix it if it were me. It would irritate me just KNOWING that was up there and I would see it every time I wash it. It is personal preference, but would you regret it sometime down the road if you didn't have it fixed?

I'm somewhat the same way. It's kind of like the out of sight, out of mind philosophy. I am pretty anal though and that's what I worry about, if I'll regret it later.

take the money and get a WMW roof rack, don't event get the dents pulled. It will look awesome on your white truck with those rims and will cover everything. FREE MOD!

I'm in the anal boat - I would fix it. But I'm only an occasional off roader so I don't have a lot of body damage already.

Same here, and I especially won't have any body damage after all of this gets fixed.
The hood will be replaced, the bumper, fenders, 3 doors and the lift gate will be repainted. Plus the windshield will be replaced.

Bondo and paint it up... I had a ding on the roof of my truck from a branch and it irritated me. I like my toys pristine and clean. Of course I also use them and abuse them, but I keep them repaired and looking good. If you don't fix it, plasti-dip and full roof rack! That will at least hide the hail damage.

I voted fix it, but only to the extent PDR can resolve. I don't think I'd personally go through with welding on a new roof skin for something superficial...good luck with whatever you choose!

Hey Terri, so you taking it in to your old mans place? I thought I remember you saying he would be doing the work.

If that's the case, you got a settlement of 7k, he does the work for less than that obviously.

I say let him repair and you will be happy like it being new, and you should have enough cha-ching left over to get one of those GOBI'S, maybe even a light or 2. Win, win, situation. :reddance:

I just hasd my 4Runner hail damage repaired 10 months ago. Damage to roof, hood, tops of both front fenders, above all four doors and door handles, both rear quarter panels. Insurance covered $5000 paintless dent repair and a 5-day rental car. Went to ABRA body shop, came out great. Obviously I think you should repair, it will protect the value. Besides,, you really want to ride around in a pimpled 4Runner?

Yes, my husband is a collision technician so he'll be the one fixing everything for me. He's estimating that it will cost about $600 for materials (paint, hood etc). So yes, I pocket a great deal. I've ordered new UCA's and Rock Sliders already.

Obviously I think you should repair, it will protect the value. Besides,, you really want to ride around in a pimpled 4Runner?

The value is probably the most important thing to me. I hate that it's 'pimpled' now and I'm ecstatic about having it fixed. The roof isn't visible, so it's not something I would be bothered about. I just don't want to be sorry in the long run.

Talking to my husband, it'd take him about 12 hours to fix it. If he didn't fix it and a potential buyer wanted to have it fixed it'd cost about $3000 for parts and labor - which would more than likely be negotiated in my sale price.
So with that, I think it'd be worth fixing it.

:wow: WOW you really did get some hail damage. They said they couldn't push any of the dents on any of those panels? I know the bumpers are plastic but what about the rest of them? Man.....

Yes, very lucky!
My windshield was actually cracked about year ago when I passed an uncovered dump truck full of rock on the interstate.
My bumper is just getting repaired because the dealership drilled my license plate holes in the wrong spot.

No, he can't fix the entire roof PDR. He will have to fix it conventional and PDR since he's not replacing it. So this will take more time, but save us a lot of money.

Personally, I'd take the money and run. If you decide down the road that you just can't handle the dents, fix it then.

Unless you're planning on divorcing hubby, in which case best to get it fixed now .

Here's the thing though... think of it this way.... if you were a chef and you worked M-F 8am-6pm, the last thing you'd probably want to do is come home and cook for a group of people for another 4-5 hours.
This is what he has to do. All by his choice. I've told him over and over that we could just forfeit the savings and book it into the shop. He refuses.
They're so busy right now and there's no time for my car during regular business hours. So once he's done with a hard days work, he has to work on my truck. I'm trying to save him some work by leaving the roof as is, but he too thinks I'll regret it later.

My '03 got schwacked by a Texas-sized T-storm back in 2003 and looked like a golf ball afterwards. I had paintless dent repair done by PARS PDR and couldn't believe the before/afterwards difference. I was very skeptical of Paintless dent repair until I got it back from the shop. Unbelievable!! They did an awesome job of removing every dent.
