Replace K&N with ______?

Seattle4Runner

When I purchased my 4Runner it came with a poorly installed K&N cold air intake (no heat shield, filter not securely attached). Anyway, after reading lots about different air filter setups, I've decided to replace it - but with what?

I'd love to get everyone's opinion on the options I've come up with:

1) OEM (if I can find all the parts)
2) AEM Brute Force
3) Volant Cold Air Intake

Right now, I leaning towards #3, but if there are other options that people think are better, I'd appreciate knowing about those, too.

thanks!

Do you want looks or function and are you on a budget?

If you want the same performance at a fraction of the cost just go back to the OEM airbox and do the deckplate mod and get the same 7-8whp you'd see with the costly airboxes. Some of those airboxes weigh double the stock setup so the HP gain might be canceled out a bit with the extra weight.

Just something to consider since most air intakes are just another way to lighten your wallet with looks more than function.

The Volant looks nice and I'd take one if it was given to me but since we drive Toyotas how many times is your hood up enough to show it off.

Good points, Ron.

My primary concern is that the current K&N is rubbing and wearing a hole in the side of the filter, so it's got to go. Also, this summer I did a lot of driving on dirt roads, so I'd prefer something with a more enclosed intake. The other factor is that I'm not experienced with this stuff, so putting a OEM back together won't be intuitive (i.e., at least the after-market mods come with instructions).

All of them cost about the same, so I'm stuck with about $250 regardless.

I vote go back to stock. You can probably pick up an airbox for under $50 either online or at your salvage yard.

Skip the deckplate mod - waste of time.

With all the K&N haters out there, I'm surprised by only getting 5 replies.

No one else has an opinion??

If not, I plan on placing an order this weekend.

sorry i'm late....
I have a k&N. I like it and i think the added throttle response is worth it. I dont know about any added HP, but like i said the TR is worth it..
