Hello - I cracked my driver's side mirror. The dealer told me I can order a new mirror glass for $50 but suggested that I pay him to replace it due to the delicate nature of the install. I can find aftermarket or used mirror enclosures online but from what I've read, I would have to remove the door panel to install. Is it easier to replace the mirror glass or the entire mirror enclosure?

dealer sounds correct to me. I'd let them do it if they price it right. The attached PDF shows how it works. Note the change in design for the 2000 year.

Yes you need to remove the door panel to change the entire mirror housing.

My daughter broke her mirror so I bought a new one at the dealer and then a few months later I find we have an LKQ salvage yard a short distance away So I go to LKQ and find a complete mirror assembly (same color) for 19.00 plus 8.00 core charge, I was pissed that I spent 50.00 on a piece of glass.
Replacing the glass is not a bad job at all. I removed the assembly and did it on the bench. Removing the door panel is really easy, do it yourself and save the money. I now have 3 desert dune mirror assemblies.

badattitude - thanks for the instructions. The dealer (really a guy who works in the service dept.) told me that the mirror glass comes with the black trim and the plate that the glass is glued to. If I understood him correctly, I have to pop the plate (with the glass) out of the housing without breaking it. However, the instructions seem to indicate that the glass does not come with the back plate. I heard that these service guys are on commission so I'm always skeptical when they tell me to let them do it. He said the mirror costs $50 and the install will be about $100. I tried to get him to tell me how to remove the plate, but he didn't.

traffic61 - $15 sounds a lot better than $150. I assume you scrapped the broken glass and adhered the new glass to the plate underneath?

It was a fairly painless process. I pulled the big garbage can underneath the mirror housing and began the removal of all of the mirror pieces. I then had to remove the adhesive from the backing plate. I think I used some form of adhesive remover and elbow grease. After the backing plate was clean, I went over it with some alcohol to remove any grease before I attached the new mirror's adhesive pads. Then I just pressed it into place firmly. Hope this helps.

Check out ebay, I paid $5 shipped for my passenger's side. didn't take long to remove fragmented pieces but definitely have safety glasses and gloves on.
