Replaced CV's, Now have steering knuckle seal issues

Spent all day Saturday replacing most of the front end of my 05. Did both half shafts, both differential seals and the steering knuckle seal on the passenger side. Also replaced the rotors pads and calipers. The most time consuming part of the process was installing the new steering knuckle seal. Had to end up pressing it in with a few clamps. After I got it all back together I'm getting a metal to metal grinding noise coming from that steering knuckle. Looking at the old seal and the new one it appears the replacement seals have a larger metal ring. Below are pictures of the two seals. The first old seal on the driver's side.

Now the next picture is of the new seal I installed. The width of the ring is larger than the old seal. The second part is hard to see but because of this it has deformed the outer seal ring back when I torqued down the axle nut.

On the old drivers side seal stays stationary and the dust cover ring on axle spins with the CV. Now on the passenger side both rings are stationary and the axle spins. The outer ring is now rubbing on the CV housing.

I have either installed something wrong or I have the wrong part. I think if I bend the brass dust cover ring on the CV so it no longer touches the new steering knuckle seal the grinding noise should stop. That being said these parts should fit. Thoughts?

The lip on that second seal looks messed up. Is it an OEM seal?. Could you have messed it up trying to press it in? If you freeze the knuckle the seal should go on much easier.

I recently did the same thing and had the same problem as you. it took some research and visiting all the auto parts store in town and the dealer. It looks like you used the seal that is supposed to go in between the hub an wheel bearing. For some reason you cannot get the seal between the knuckle and cv joint from the auto parts store, they don't even have it in their computer. Toyota carries it but I had to sit down with the parts guy to find it in their computer. Also if you look at the original picture the seal is actually 2 pieces that pull apart, one side goes on the cv joint and the other installs into the knuckle and they turn inside each other that is why you are getting the rubbing noise. I hope you still have the old one because Toyota didn't have the part that installed on the cv joint just the one you press into the knuckle. Let me know if I didn't explain it well enough and I can clarify, this was a major headache for me because I tried for a while to make the seal you used work before I figured out that the original seal was 2 pieces.

I believe it is the 43211v and 43212L right side and left side and as I said this was the same breakdown at Toyota and it does not show the other part that installs on the CV joint.

If you meant me, PM me.

I just replaced the brass seal on the knuckle last week. The seal that came with my NAPA CV was preinstalled.

He used the axle cap to tap in the seal!!

I just deformed the brass portion of the old seal with a big screwdriver and hammer until it popped out, being super careful not to touch the steel underneath. I only tapped on the brass.

Then I gently tapped the new seal in with a hard rubber mallet.

This dude^ took it a step further. Wish I would have thought of that!!!!

BRILLIANT!!! Just received my Knuckle Seals 90316-A0001 from Toyota and this is the method I am going to use to install them. Have 163k on my '04 Runner and replacing hub/bearings (OE Koyo Japan) cv shafts and Toyota rotors. My cv shafts are Napa (Cardone Select New) any thoughts on these? Considering it was going to run me just under $800 from Toyota for the cv shafts this was the alternative I chose. Saving of $560!!! >;-))

Part number

I just ordered (from my local dealer's parts counter) an inside steering knuckle seal for my 05 SR5 4Runner (same part number for an 04, which I also have):

90316-A0001 (replaces 90316-7).

$49

I haven't installed it yet, but wanted to pass along this information.

A suggestion: If you choose to remove the knuckle from the truck to do this job, it might break loose easily from the upper ball joints with just a few hammer blows. Mine did. But before you do that, first secure it with a strap so that when the knuckle does break free of the ball joint, it doesn't suddenly drop like the heavy weight it is.

This is a very informative thread on the CV axle/knuckle seal(s), clarifying that it is a 2-piece seal clears up the confusion I had, thank you.
