replaced fuel pump- still won't start. help?

I recently paid way to much for an 88 4runner on the understanding that the guy I bought it from would help me out with anything more involved than reg maintenence. Also took his word that the engine had been replaced with one w lower kms, doubting that now too...
Anyway. The fuel pump went. I figured that was the issue as it was getting power but not coming on when turning engine over. Replaced the fuel pump. Tested it. It's working. Truck still will not start. I don't know what to say it's a bit of a Frankenstein but I'm not totally mechanicly retarded so can usually figure out stuff given enough time and info.
That being said, do I need to bleed the system? Prime the pump? I thought the electric pumps didn't need priming so I just swapped it out and put it back together...
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

There are some interlocks on the power to the fuel pump.
You can bypass them by jumpering the +B and Fp terminals of the test connector, which is located adjacent to the engine bay fuse box.
Then check to see if your getting fuel to the fuel rail.one way to do that is pull the cold start injector and see if its spraying.

A problem well-stated is a problem half-solved. What engine? If 22R-E, do as fourwd1 said above^^

Then, verify that fuel pump is wired properly. See schematic and explanation how it works with circuit opening relay here.

Then let us know what you find out, and we'll go from there.

What they said. Also, define "not starting" - it does nothing at all? Just clicks when you turn the key? Or it turns over but won't catch?

Try placing some needle nose vise grips on the return line of the fuel regulator. If you block this return line and it starts you need to replace the fuel regulator and if so for Gods sake don't by a after market from auto supply house. save yourself the hassle and replace with original Denso unit. I learned that the hard way.
