Replaced P/S Pump AND Reservoir...still leaking.

Hey all,

I recently changed the P/S pump and reservoir on my '99 2.7. Before I replaced the old reservoir, I was finding fluid all on the underside of the hood, on the reservoir itself and on top of the pump. Since I replaced the pump and reservoir, it's safe to say that the reservoir is staying dry, there is no fluid on the underside of the hood BUT I'm still finding wet spots underneath the p/s pump. I was looking at it from below today and saw that there was a large drip waiting to fall on my forehead, underneath the banjo bolt. Any suggestions?

have you checked your hoses or any of the gaskets that you used such as a o-rings

hoses look clean. o rings (on the power steering pump and reservoir) are also new.

Could be that the 2.7 and 3.4 pumps are different...

but on the 3.4 pump there is a double copper washer that goes on the high pressure banjo fitting

In either case there needs to be a crush washer for the banjo fitting, and they cannot be reused. P/S systems operate at pressures of at least 1500 PSI. That pressure will find any weak point and cause a leak

Dous speaks da troof. The washer is strange looking. It's basically a U-shaped piece of copper with rounded ends and two large holes in either end for the banjo fitting to sit inside.

Guys, I didn't touch the banjo bolt. As far as I'm concerned, it's still original. Are you saying I need to replace the crush washers around it?

Here is what the copper washers look like. They are just like copper washers you'd find on a brake caliper.

how did you change the pump, without removing that bolt?

I totally get it now. I'm so visual--that helped a LOT! Um, yeah. I didn't replace those. :ybrick:

I feel the bottom of the pump after every drive and I always find a little residue. It's gotta be a weak seal of some sort.

If you took apart the banjo and reused the copper washer that is where it is leaking. It is a crush washer and cannot be reused. Sure you can reuse an oil drain bolt crush washer, but the P/S system operates at 1500 PSI; as mentioned

Its a 2 dollar part and 5 minutes of your time

If you want to make sure have someone turn the wheel while the car is in park while you look at it to find the leak

I'm confused about the proper copper gasket(s) to be used. After pulling out my PS pump I had two separate copper gaskets that went on either side of the pressure feed tube in which the banjo bolt fed through. Is it possible that these two separate gaskets were replaced with the single U-shaped copper gasket mentioned above?

The U shaped copper gasket is the proper gasket from Toyota.
Could be the previous person who serviced the ps, didn't want to get or couldn't get the Toyota one and used 2 separate gaskets, which would be fine if it's not leaking.
The U shape just makes it easier to install, don't have to juggle 2 gaskets in place while you bolt the hose on.
