replacement keys?

hey guys, just wondering how one would go about replacing a key for their 4th gen T4R. would I have to get one from the dealer? or can i just go to any key shop and make a copy?

one of my alarm remotes are also out of battery/not working.

The key has a chip in it, so the dealer has to program it for you. It is possible to get the key elsewhere, but until it's programmed, it doesn't do you any good.

The key functions have been discussed before, so a search will get you the information.

looks like i'll have to shell out a good amount of $$ to get a replacement key/alarm :(
 
You should be able to just swap the battery out on the key fob. I think it's just a simple watch battery, but I've never opened it myself.

The key themselves have a transponder chip built into the rubber piece (that's why it is so thick). The key will need to be cut, then programmed by the dealership. If it is not programmed, the key will open the doors and such but will not be able to start the vehicle.
 
Just for a comparison, I had a new key cut fro my 3rd gen at the dealership a few weeks ago. I gave them my VIN and 5 mins and $6 later I had a key.
So the actual key cutting is not expensive at all. Cant comment on the programing tho

Make sure you have the tag with a 4-digit (right number? is it 5?) number stamped into it. Dealers can make keys based on this number. Otherwise the dealer will have to replace the whole engine immobilizer system, costing big $$.
 
So how much does a dealership charge for an additional master key? Is there a limit to how many they can make?

I always carry a spare when I go on a trip and it seems that I have misplaced one. I can only find two, I think I must have had 3 when I got the truck from the dealer.

I paid, in '04, about $56.00 for a spare master key at a dealer in OK while on a trip, and an additional $25.00 to program it. There is a maximim limit of 4 keys that can be programed into the system at any one time. If you already have 4 keys in the system, and lose one, it has to be de-programed from the system before a replacement can be added.

There are two master keys (black rubber key head) and a valet key (gray rubber key head) that Toyota provides with their cars and trucks.

You can also try going to a hardware store and see if they'll cut you a regular key. It won't start the truck, but if you lock your keys inside you can get back into the truck. I tried to have OSH cut me a key, but they wouldn't because it has a transponder (immobilizer system). I'm going to try Home Depot and/or Lowe's next time I'm there.
 
I have 2 master keys so somewhere I have misplaced the valet key. If I can only have 4 keys programmed into the system at a time this means I can only get one additional transponder key without reprogramming of the truck.

I have plenty of non-transponder keys. A locksmith shop had no trouble cutting these for me.

No matter what, if you want to add a 4th key you will need to have it programed into the system. The lost key will not be a problem until you want to add what would amount to be a 5th key to replace the lost one. Then you will have to have the missing key removed by reprograming 1st before you could add another key. Simply put, any addition or removal of a chip key from the system requires programing
