replacing front seats?!?

Hi All:

I am looking for answers to an issue I have not seen addressed on this forum: (if it has please direct me to the thread - thanks):

Is it possible and/or wise to replace the front driver's seat and front passenger seat with a seat from another truck or car that one finds more comfortable than the 4Runner front seats?

Will another make and model's seat fit the "rails" and can you connect its power cables to the existing 4Runner source?

I love my '04 4Runner, but my wife complains about the seats and I am wondering what I can do to add lumbar to the passenger seat and extra thigh support for both seats ....

I look forward to your responses. Thanks.

Will seats from other vehicles bolt and plug right in, for the most part no. Obviously 4Runner seats would work fine, I upgarded my base 00 interior to the power leather seats from a LTD and they bolted in, wiring the power was another matter. You could check Landcruiser seats as they are probably nicer and may have a similar bolt design, probably hard to find used, and expensive to boot. But really with a bit of fabrication any seats will work, volvos seem to be popular donors. Worst case you need to make new bolt points on the new seats so they fit, maybe some cutting and welding at most. Then wiring them up is no big deal either, you just need to find adequate power close by, some have even said the wire is there on the 4th gen, just under the carpet a ways, the wire was not there on mine, just the seat belt warning power source.

no expert but..

...make certain the restraints (we used to call them seatbelts) and airbag alignment works with whatever you choose. Don't want to get too high or too low with an airbag or risk slipping under the seatbelt.

Other than that, I cannot imagine why something else would not work.

installing 4rnr seats fm later model

hey guys/gals. i was browsing the few posts about replacing the seats. i have a 98 sr5. was thinking about putting heated seats from some donor model. no pwr seats in my truck, just basic manual. if i got the switches/seats, etc how hard would it be to wire up? is the pwr seat wiring harnesses in position under the carpet and then the heat switches in the dash? truck has everything i need but the heated seats. anyone tackle this before or know the answers?

This is what I did in my 00, though my new seats are just power, not heated. The wiring for the power seats was not there, just the plug for the seat belt warning light, which is not sufficient. I had a friend wire mine and he borrowed the power from under the door sill, I believe one of the window lines. The person who did it works as a toyota tech so they had access to the factory wiring specs before doing the work. The wiring for the heated seats is also not there even the wire for the heated mirrors from the defrost switch is not there so adding heated mirrors is a pain. Mine is a base model so potentially SR5 and Limited models would have wiring for different options.

frank im getting new cobra lemans seats next week.. i cant get comfortable either. the stock seats do suck badly... watch out for me next week ill post some pics

Dan, I would love an update on your new seats. I have had thoughts of trading my 04 for sometime bc the seats are so bad.

I don't think these seats are what I am looking for. What other options do I have? I have had the side bolsters shaved down flat already and that helped a lot. However, still not comfortable enough.
